Lightbulb Would you buy an HDTV / blu-ray combo?

It's time to up the ante. We have seen TV / VHS combos. We have seen TV / DVD / VHS combos. It is time for the HDTV / Blu-ray combo. No cables, just an astounding picture being fed straight to the screen.

Not only can you firmware upgrade the player, but the TV as well. Brings greater perceived added value. A standardized "blade concept" would let people buy any "blu-blade" they want for the TV. In fact, the TV doesn't need to come with a player. Just remove the panel and plug in a "blu-blade", or cable box, etc.

I would certainly consider one as it is a great space and energy savor. Best of all, ONE remote control.

Forget the old adage of, "What happens when it breaks". The blu-ray player is a "blade" unit. If it breaks, you can undo the screws and send it back for repair, or replace it with an upgraded unit. Makes the TV investment much more sound long term.

I'd love to head up that project. Who is with me? <Starts handing out torches and pitch forks> Oh, sorry.... got carried away.

i'm sure most people will agree with me that these things are a good IDEA but in practice rarely work out that well. while I have looked at these tv/dvd combos before I have never bought one.

I like a device that does 1 thing well. not 1 that does a few things ok. the 1 exception to the rule is the ps3. which is a media center and does that damn well.

with combo tv/dvd players i've seen the dvd player go to $hit and take the tv with it. so to drop a ton of money on a tv and a blu ray player in one, with that amount of risk. no thanks.

Well, don't forget the "blade" concept. There have been blade servers for years. Very modular and easy to upgrade. That has been the problem with the old combo's. Many times you couldn't replace the player.

Default It's a good idea

I have never purchased a combo set, but there are many out there that would. It really would not be a bad idea to give it a try.
I might even consider it too, cause I want an LCD in my room, and it might be nice if it had a built in Blu-ray player (less stuff to plug in).

any combo set you see will not be modular

And you'd better hope they never break. The repair bills are enormous.

Well, if they go that route I will forget about buying such a thing myself. The saving grace of the blade design is it can become the future of tv.

Remember, widescreen TV's are just that - wide. This could allow at least 2 blades per tv. One for the cable box, and one for the player. As long as they remain commited to this as the future of tv, home entertainment systems will become greener and leaner.

With CELL becoming standard in Toshiba and Sony sets expect to see more all-in-ones with DVRs and VOD built in, but I seriously doubt they'll ever get that clever

The other issue is cooling. How much can you really get when it's strapped to the wall?

I think maybe this got edited as I was typing my first response. this ''blade'' design. would it basicall be the tv has little slide in ports along the back and you can slide in a bd player cable box coffee grinder etc etc? that would be ok with me I think.

Well, I thought front sliding blades would be easier. But seeing how they are not things that get swapped out all the time, back loading could be acceptable for asthetic reasons. Heck, maybe even side slide-in units.

Hey guys, a new member from the Philippines... BD is the only next gen format we know here... HD DVD is (so far) non-existent...

By the way, great news... Asus now supports Blu-ray...
