How much money will the ps3 cost and what, if any, advantages will the bdp-S1 have over it?

$500 for the base model (no HDMI out!)
$600 for the better model (w/HDMI and wifi built in)

It is yet to be known if the stand alone players will truly offer ANYTHING in the way of superiority over the PS3 as a playback device. Because so much expensive hardware is included with the PS3, it is possible that it acts as a superior Blu-ray player over the stand alone units.

Since it is being marketed as a video game console, it may not be 100% easy to use it as a Blu-ray Disc player. But, this isn't known at this time.

IMO, the PS3 seems like a no-brainer... if you can get it. It likely will be comparible to other Blu-ray players at the time, it is cheap compared to other Blu-ray players... oh, and it plays a ton of video games, including new PS3 releases in HD.

At the very least the PS3 will tide me over until the format war is over and we are on 2nd - or hopefully 3rd generation Blu-ray players.

Optical can't process DolbyTruHD or DTS-HD, so you can only get those through the HDMI cable.

As for the PS3 image quality, we don't yet know if it will be better or worse. I heard some reports that the quality will be the BD equivalent of the PS2's DVD playback quality, which means it would still be better than the Samsung, heh.

The PS2 actually has a DVD player that, when it was released, was very comparible to other DVD players of that time. Since most players currently really are computers, the PS3 has every possibility of being equal, or even superior to Blu-ray stand alone players. I would be hard pressed to make any judgements - or even comments about the quality that the PS3 will have as a Blu-ray player when it hasn't been seen yet. I sure as heck wouldn't hold the PS2 up as an example, but if you must, remember that the PS2 was comparible when it was released.

I am also reserving judgement on PQ and SQ. I'm just passing along what I've heard.

I would imagine that sound quality will be better ont he stand alone player but that picture quality might be the same or slightly better on the ps3.

When you hear it, pass back the correct info. Most people slam the PS2 DVD drive like it is lousy, instead of comparible to others of the time. For the money, I could buy almost 2 PS3s instead of one stand alone player... that in itself has a real appeal to me.

Oh yeah - and video games... That game system comes free with my Blu-ray Disc player right?

Yessir, it does!
