Hello fellow blu-ray fans,
I'm new to this site, but not really that new to blu-ray. I've been following all of the war debate for some time, and some of it is quite amusing. Anyway, I've got the ol' ps3 with 2 games (more soon hopefully), and about 32 blu-ray movies at this point. When I was deciding on an HDM format to get, I put in a lot of research. Of course price played a factor, as well as support, features, etc. I chose to get the ps3, because from what I was hearing, it actually turned out to be one of the best blu-ray players out there. Sure I could have went with HD DVD, but the money would all have been a wash in the end; I would not be saving a significant amount of money either way. As an early adopter, I realized that chosing either one would money spending some cash on some of the "finer things in life." Ok, so price really isn't a factor anymore between two (sure, spend $100 more on a blu-ray player, but to get an equally comparable hd dvd player, you'll be spending the same amount, sorry, i don't want 1080i). Next up, movies and support - I do all of this research, and really only see hd dvd players from one manufacturer (minus the combo player), and a lot more blu-ray players from more manufacturers. This must be telling me something. I then look at movies. At the time Universal was the only major HD DVD exclusive, while Disney, Fox, etc. were blu-ray exclusive with some neutral studio support. Ok, I'll miss out on a few either way at this point, but blu-ray has more studio support. More players, more studio support, more manufacturer support. I'm starting to really lean blu. After this I really went in depth to check out the specs of the different formats, to see which has more potential in the future (since we still are at a somewhat early stage in the game). More disc capacity for blu-ray, more data bandwidth for blu-ray, avc encoding on some good titles. Not a lot of interactivity at this point, but that's really not a big concern for me, since I never used the special features on any dvd, which I own a lot of. I want to watch good movies in high-definition with high-definition sound; that's really all I ask for. Anyway, as the fog clears, I realized that blu-ray was the only logical choice. It is selling better, has more potential for future growth, has more studio and manufacturer support, has higher all around capacities, etc. For some of those universal titles, I can wait til they come out on blu-ray. So, I decided to get the ps3, and stick with blu-ray only; I don't want to waste my money on a fledgling format. Something else to look forward to - as time goes on, blu-ray will get even better because it has a lot of room for growth. I think Toshiba will hold on to the bitter end (missing out on the future high-def royalties will be a change from all of the dvd royalties they pulled in), and so will some of the more hard-core hd dvd fans. I'm not really a "war" kind of guy, but at the same time, I'm not going to throw away my money on something that's moving out the door, so if I want high-def to have a future, I have to support blu-ray, it's the only choice (and not a bad one either). Yeah, that's kind of long, as are my other posts on other forums around the net, but I just wanted to let you know the process that I went through when deciding to finally buy into HDM. It probably isn't to dissimilar from many others' experiences. |

Hey, bjs8579! I would agree that most people did the same thing and of course came to the same logical conclusion. I am relatively new to this site as well. So from one newbie to another; welcome aboard and enjoy the ride!!

I started a Hardcore HD DVD fan in April 2006, laughted at Blu-Ray with their poor transfert at the start of the game. Then disney and fox appeared and it started to get better.
My HD-A1 was also failing me, only 4 month after i bought , i exchanged it only to have a model who did the same thing not long after. Being frustrated, i waited for the A2 to be available and comments from USER. I saw the same problems going over and over with this new model. I then sold all my HD DVD movie (60 of them) and my player on Ebay, bought a PS3 February and NEVER.. EVER had a single glitch with it.. not even a skip! I'am now a BluRay fan, even bought myself a Tshirt off Ebay! ![]() |

Welcome to the Blu-ray club.
It's only a matter of time until HD DuD capitulates totally....by the end of the Xmas holidays the end of this format war will be in sight. |

Welcome! It's refreshing to hear that people new to HDM are actually taking the time to research the competing formats and come to the inevitable conclusion that Blu-ray is far superior. I wish more people did this and used logic rather than emotion for their purchases.

Welcome! I came to the same conclusions. I spent hours looking at both sides....playing with machines.....on-line research....etc. I had originally seen a Blu-Ray demo a few years back on a huge screen with a $25K Sony projection system at the Stereophile show in NYC and was completely floored.
Both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray look and sound great at their best. I came to the conclusion that if I wanted one format, the one that had the best chance was Blu-Ray due to the studio support and the PS3. I also noticed that other manufacturers were and would make machines for the format as oppossed to just one manufacturer....Toshiba. Hey.....I also think the name is cool! ![]() |

I don't know about that. seems mighty odd that this thread pops up so close to theirs, and is the same style of writing that nomad had. i'm skeptical.
but i'll welcome you either way. all are welcome until they give reason not to be. |

Welcome BJS, and thanks for that story. Gets tiring just reading opinions around here. Speaking of opinions...
![]() I have made the analogy that Warner and Universal are still sitting on the fence with both legs in the blu-ray camp. You were wise to pick us. Keep in mind, a number of members here are still format neutral and actually buy both formats. I guess they are our half brothers. ![]() With that said, HD DVD has one leg in the grave with Paramount / Dreamworks clinging to the other leg for dear life. It won't die any time soon, make no mistake. Would take a slick legal move to get out the exclusive contract. |

Thanks for the welcome guys, but no I'm not one of those other guys, nomad or puki - completely new. As far as format neutral goes, I can understand that position. It's the pull that a lot of us probably experience, the desire to have all of it now. It's crossed my mind a few times, why not just buy both? But then I get to thinking about it more, and always decide against it. No, I'll just wait it out for a year or two until the inevitable (at least that's what I believe) victory of blu-ray, and hopefully all studios will be releasing for it. Plus I need to save that extra money to support my other expensive hobby, motorcycle racing. Man, the costs involved in buying into high-def don't even compare to what you spend racing.
