Mark Rein: PS3 in 'Better Place to Launch' than 360
Outspoken Epic Games VP says Sony is ahead of the game. by Patrick Klepek, 07/26/2006 20 of 22 users recommend this story. "Developers were just getting final PS3 hardware [around E3], which is a long time before ship," said the Gears of War developer in an interview with Eurogamer TV. "Developers did not have finished Xbox 360 hardware last year at E3. So Sony's actually maybe in a better place vis-a-vis Microsoft in relation to launch." On the flip side, Microsoft has spent a year tweaking their plans and preparing for Christmas 2006, while Sony will be working through launch pains this holiday season. Though Sony's launch numbers may end up more successful than Xbox 360's, Microsoft has the advantage of squashed supply issues, second generation game releases (albeit many of the multi-platform ones are arriving on PS3, too), and an established, proven and respected online service already in place. Whether any of that matters in November, though, remains to be seen. posted from: http://egm.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3152433 |

"We just spent the last 18 months coding this game for X360 in HD, it'll be killer this holiday season!"
"Oh, hey look, PS3... Hmmm...." (200 man hours later) "Hey look, we are releasing this game we've been working on for 18 months on BOTH X360 and the new PS3!" Gotta say, that works for me. ![]() |

I do want to add a quick note. On ps3land.com, there was an article that talked about a company that Sony knows is building ps3's for launch time, the only problem is that Sony didn't have enough CPU or RSX chips. That was the last that I heard. To avoid a shortage, Sony will have to began mass production at least by Augest so that there are enough ps3's to go around. Sony reps were unavailable for comment so that means that maybe Sony hasn't began mass production yet or they have and they're not mentioning anything about it because of the crisitism that they have faced since E3. We'll know more at the September Tokoyo Game show. Sony still has a few loose ends to tie up prior to launch. They are:
1) How the online network will work and what it will look like? 2) What ps1 and ps2 games will not work on the ps3, if any? 3) How we will use our ps1 and ps2 memory cards with the ps3? These are the main loose ends that I know of, but there may be more. |

1) we prob will have no idea until sony releases screens or we get the system. no idea how we will know otherwise. 2) my understanding is tht all will work. if not, this will be a surprise and will go against everything i have heard. 3) most likely a usb dongle. |

It's hard to say which next gen console will win. Most think Sony will come in third place, but I don't see how updated parts and a blu-ray disc drive can't put Sony in first place.

Sony has to combat the X Box 360 from Microsoft and the Wii from Nintendo, but the 360 more because both Sony and Microsoft are in the same boat. A lot of people said that at E3, Sony was hated and Nintendo was loved. I think that a lot of people are letting the ps3's high price tag get in the way. It's true that you can get a Wii and a 360 for the same price as the ps3, but what do you want to pay for a ps3?

Nintendo USED to have this: NES-SNES, Now Sony does. Microsoft...well, the Japanese sales of the xbox & 360 speak volumes. IMO the japanese still make some of the coolest games from a wide variety of genre's. |

I wanted to add that Sony plans to do a network similar to X Box live. There haven't been any screenshots to show what the network interface will look like. At last years E3, Microsoft showed the new X Box live interface on the 360. I see no reason why Sony wouldn't do the same thing so that everyone can see what they will have if they go online. If I find anything out about the network interface in the weeks to come, I'll post a link.

The Playstation brand name has such instant cache and recognition too.
When people talk about a game console they say Playstation as though it's almost the same thing. |
