Check out this link:

It's only a matter of time for HD-DVD to throw in the towel.

I think I read this before somewhere but any time cost goes down without it effecting quality it's great news to the consumer and the manufactures.

I read this article awhile back. It's a great idea IF a firmware upgrade for existing players (including the PS3) would work. Otherwise, I think this idea will get kicked by the wayside just like the TL51 disc will get "scrapped" if Toshiba can't get a firmware upgrade for existing HD-DVD players to work with those discs ().

When Blu-ray first came on the market, there were concerns due to the cost of producing the discs. Unlike HD DVD, Blu-ray disc production could not be done on existing production lines due to the dyes used. Now, Blu-ray disc production is set to get a lot cheaper due to the development of a new organic dye.

The dye has been developed through a collaboration between Pioneer and Mitsubishi and now allows for the discs to be produced on modified DVD production lines. The discs use low to high (LTH) technology that allows for write-once disc manufacturing.

The news isn’t all good, however, with the new manufacturing technique incompatible with existing Blu-ray drives, making the discs unreadable, but there is hope that a firmware update could solve that problem in the future.

Blu-ray drives capable of burning on the new discs will be available from Pioneer in the first half of 2008.

Read more at PCPro.

Matthew’s Opinion

This is really good news for Sony going forward, and hopefully the company can resolve the backwards compatibility problems. The cost of disc manufacturing was always something the HD DVD camp had as a positive for its format, but that is now likely to disappear and could be another sign that Blu-ray is the likely winner in this format battle.

With existing DVD production lines now capable of an upgrade rather than a total refit, more manufacturers are likely to gear up for Blu-ray disc production. More production means lower cost per disc produced, and that will save everyone money– including Sony.
This will be good in the PC world. Just don't expect it to transition into the "Hollywood/Movie" sector unless they can get a firmware upgrade to work for existing players.

The use of organic dye is only for BD-R/RWs not for BD-ROM, which is for BD movies and BD games.

This is STILL good news because this will encourage more CEs to produce more BD burners because they anticipate that the cost savings on the BD blanks will be passed on to consumers. MORE BD burners will lead to lowering of the price of the burners, which will lead to more usage of BD blanks.

That's what I thought too, this is only for writeable discs not for movies or games. But this could make BD drives more affordable to use for PCs.

In crew we would bet the shirts on our backs but I'm not so sure I'd want to be "sporting" a HD DVD shirt around.

I liked your idea. It was cheeky. Plus, it was no worse than the average chav that wears nothing but Nike and Yankee logos.
