Default So I guess I suck!

After doing some (but not enough) research, I told my father-in-law that the new receiver he was about to buy needed 1080p passthrough so that he could hook his dvd player & cable box to it via hdmi and not lose any video signal when the receiver is hooked up to the tv via hdmi.

Now I'm reading that an hdmi port that is labeled 1080p passthrough is basically junk when it comes to audio as it is solely intended for video and really what he needed was just a regular hdmi port not labeled as 1080p passthrough.

Is that pretty much the jist of it? I don't know the make or model of his receiver so I can't list it. I feel like Charlie Brown right after Lucy swished the football away from under his feet.

Yes 'passthrough' is just that, it is dumb.

Yes, I bought the pass through by mistake. The pass through just does what it says it is. It passes audio and video to the tv. The receiver will not use ANY of the audio AT ALL. Don't buy a pass through.

He need a receiver that process a HDMI signal..

the 1080p / 1080i is another story... just like HDMi 1.1 vs. 1.3

The best would be a receiver that process the signal and that is 1.3 compliant

I'm trying to ascertain the strengths and weaknesses of 1080p passthrough. From my now more thorough research and the input of the other posts in this thread, it sounds as though 1080p passthrough is a joke and that it should be destroyed.

Yes, pass-through sucks! Sony got me on that one. I returned the receiver and got the correct one. I have no idea what purpose it serves.

I can't, for the life of me, figure out what the point of sticking HDMI into a receiver is, if it's not going to take the audio. Maybe for someone with 2 short cords? :P

Thanks for letting me commiserate. I guess when I'm rich I'll buy him a REAL receiver. Oh well, for now let me give you all one bit of advice:
The next time you're in Best Buy, if you drop anything, don't bend over to pick it up. Just leave it there. Your ass will thank me!

It acts as a source switcher. Most HDMI pass thru receivers have 2-3 HDMI inputs, thus allowing all of your signals to go to the receiver so that you'll never have to change a channel on your tv.

A very expensive switch indeed! Also, if you hook it up so that you don't have to change the channel, you don't get any sound from the receiver. Instead, I hooked his cable box and his dvd player via component cables with the video going directly into the tv (bypassing the receiver entirely) and the sound going through the receiver. He'll have to switch his tv from video 4 to video 5 whenever he wants to switch devices, but at least he gets the audio and video.

You mentioned a switch. On the off-chance, is there a switch available that will fix this whole passthrough fiasco?
