Default People buy HD DVD just by seeing the word 'DVD'......

I know so many people, especially middle aged people who were staisfied by their DVDs and then saw new products in the market. One was HD DVD and the Blu-ray. Now, those who have had their DVD players since ages, think that HD DVD is better because it has the words 'DVD' at the end. It took me ages to explain my parents that HD DVD was not the superior prouct just because it had something to do with the word 'DVD'. Some people don't even know what Blu-ray is........IGNORANCE at its best I should say.

to be honest I don't think "DVD" is not what influenced people to pick a format. its the media section employees who don't have an idea about whats going on in this format war. THEY ARE THE REASON CONSUMERS ARE CONFUSED.

its like a ferrari against a geo it does and will outperform it on on every level but the only the people who own a geo are smart enough to know a ferrari is better. i dont get why hddvd people cant realize that.. lol

Yeah I had this problem when I got blu-ray. I had to tell them I got like a high definition dvd when I explained blu-ray movies. When I said like a hd dvd they understood oh you bought hd movies. To them dvd was movies.

I agree. Product association at its finest. But I think the companies who developed Blu-ray realized they are creating a whole new technology and wanted to get away from the whole DVD term. HD-DVD is based on many existing DVD patents so technically it makes sense. Blu-ray is an entirely new format/media.

HD-DVD also seems like a home theater specific word. With recording, isn't it HD-DVD-Rs, or HD-DVD-RWs? That sounds ridiculous. I'll take BD-R.

I might be completely off target, but I think Planet Earth selling as well as it has can be attributed to the crowd of people we are talking about in this thread. The name HD-DVD creates consumer confusion and I know several people that think the "DVD" part of HD-DVD means they can play it in any ol' DVD player.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I'd pay to see the numbers of HD-DVDs returned to the store every week because "they wouldn't play in my player." Take those away and I bet HD-DVD loses at least a few points on the weekly Neilsen #'s. Dunno about Dud's bc I never look at them, but at least Blu movies have a "Requires Blu-Ray player or PS3 to play this disc" sticker. They aren't trying to fool anybody and I respect that.

You just hit the nail on the head. The returns that must be coming must be outrageous and its true they do not mark there disc with any type of sticker stating you need a hd player.

I worked at Best Buy till September this year. I had to listen to foolish things that people came up with regarding Blu-ray. This one guy told me that blu-rays emitted harmful radiation. This one rich guy thought blu-ray was outdated 3 years ago and HD DVD was the best thing that ever happened to him. I had people return HD DVDs saying that their DVD players won't read them. Planet Earth series was also on Oprah's favorite things show. I can just imagine people buying it on HD-DVD and not knowing its for HD-DVD players lol. Anything on her favorite things show sells like crazy.
