Default Sony BDP-S301 with Bose 321 system

I would like to ask for help with a problem I am having with this setup. I saw your post about the BDP-300 with the Bose 321 and am hoping you may know. I am a rooky at this so I am hoping it is something very simple. I hooked the Sony up with a HDMI cable to my Phillips Plasma TV. I hooked up the TV to the Bose with the orange digital cable. When playing regular DVDs on the blu-ray everything is working fine but when I go to blu-ray discs I have an audio problem. When I start the blu-ray disc the audio is working fine through the promos and the intro screen to the movie. When I hit start to play the movie in the intro screen, it starts and there is no sound. During the promos the bose unit shows digital dolby 5.1 but when the movie starts it is PDM 2.0 and no sound. When using the Bose unit for all other components I have to bring the volume on the TV to 0. I can get the Blu-ray sound by turning off the Bose and turning up the volume on the TV but the sound from those speakers is not very good.

My audio settings on the Sony are max on the audio control under a/c control. I am at software version 3.7. In the audio setup I am at Dolby digital under Dolby Digital, DTS under the DTS, Lt/RT under DTS Downmix, and auto under audio(HDMI). Speakers are set at 2 channel. I called Sony but the young lady just had me double everything I just said and told me to contact Bose. I have sent them an email.

I hope I covered everything and appreciate if anyone has an answer to this.

being that the BOSE cannot accept HDMI audio...you will only get 2.0 PCM through the optical/digital coax.

you should connect the audio cable directly from the player to the bose...going through the TV to the BOSE could lose you support for certain audio formats. But if you must, make sure in your TV settings for audio you select digital audio output to "Dolby" or "Bitstream" (whichever is an option)

What audio setting are you choosing on the BD Menu? I'm suspecting your TV isn't downmixing it and sending out the tosllink.

Can you go directly from the toslink out on the BD player to the toslink in on the Bose HT receiver?

You'll need to run your optical from the BDP direct to the Bose receiver. Set your BDP to bitstream.

Default Sony BDP-S301 with Bose 321 system

Thanks much for answering so quickly. I knew that the Bose didn't pick up HDMI audio but I thought it would bring something through. Why will it play during the blu-ray disc previews and not the movie? Is that different audio formats? I will pick up an optical cable tomorrow to hook directly from the BDP to Bose. It is still okay to leave the HDMI hooked up for the video correct? That's the rooky talking again. I am going to check on the audio settings right now also. Any recommendations on a good optical? I have never used one before.

Thanks again!!!! I appreciate the help.

I can't say why it's having the playback issues. I'm using the Samsung BD-P1400 and I don't have that problem. Make sure you have the most current FW release for that player if you haven't done that already. Maybe someone else could speak into that problem. Yes, run a HDMI cable from your cable box to the TV, and a HDMI cable from the BDP to the TV for digital video. As far as my optical cable goes, I can't remember the name of it. All I can see is "THX" on the end of the connector going into my BDP. It's a Blue mesh cable with gold connectors.

I have my Bose receiver set to "AUX" when I watch the BDP, and it's set to TV when watching the Plasma. Maybe you need to go back into your settings on the receiver and adjust that.

You may also need to set the audio format when your Blue-Ray goes to the movie by pressing your audio options button on the remote. You can then choose the audio format that sounds best. For me it's 5.1 Dolby Digital because I'm running an optical cable instead of HDMI.

I bought an optical cable and ran it between BDP and Bose (Aux) and it is working great. Thanks again!
