Default Internet film critics in a nutshell

Of course, not every internet film blogger is like this (like Stuckmann or YMS) but honestly, how many times have you seen people like this?

Online criticism in a nutshell...

Internet critics: "This movie sucks."

Opposing view: "If you don't like these movies, then ignore them."

Me: "If you don't like an opposing opinion, then ignore it."

Jerk who wants to give me crap: "If you don't have anything to offer then you can ignore this discussion."

Me: *middle finger*

Are we referring to internet critics in terms of people with YouTube channels, or every day punters who make their opinions known on various internet forums? I'll be honest, most YouTube reviewers are okay (the ones with a considerable following and high production values; not the kids going on rants in their bedrooms). Saying that, I haven't delved too deep into YouTube film criticism.

There's no way of proving this, but I suspect a sizable chunk of self-posting internet critics -- not the ones who actually get paid by someone up above to review movies -- will initially like or hate a movie, then see which way the wind is blowing and do a complete 180 to fit in with everyone else.

They definitely do like to pile on though and use a lot of hyperbole.

They absolutely do follow trends. People want to be "in the know" and "in the crowd" and especially amateur reviewers will find this way too tempting. Also, cynically, it gets you more hits when more people agree with your opinion.

Exactly. You'll be more likely to get more hits if its a review that appears to certain people. So if you make a video review for the new GB movie and you totally go on a rant about how bad it is, rather than saying you liked it. That will garner more views. As I say. The internet for the most part is ran on negativity, and if people just started being nice all the time. The internet would crash.

This is why things like Nostalgia Critic and Angry Video Game Nerd are so popular: the humour comes from the exaggerated versions of internet negativity.

You are right that HE is the reason this is popular, but you missed the part where he basically STARTED the trend. Even NC was just ripping off AVGN and went so far as to create a fake feud with him to gain attention. *******s like Irate Gamer just copied them both and it became a trend. I liked the early AVGN episodes when it was obvious he was playing a bit, but I don't like how now people assume the bit is reality and everyone just runs around yelling into the camera, I despise those reviews now.

Funny because the major YouTube critics thought it was okay and people of course, are angry because they are being nice to it and the fact that they are pussies for telling the truth.

That's everything on the internet that gets reviewed. Check out IGN or Gamespot. Some of the commenters lose their minds over the reviews, accusing them of being paid off if the score is higher than expected or a shill for the competition if the score is lower than expected. Even if it's a positive 8.8 review for something the commenters like, they get mad because the score isn't 9.5. Every single time.

I wonder how many Ghostbusters haters actually thought the remake was decent but chose to stay on message and continue hating it because that's what their fans expected from them. Conversely, how many critics thought it wasn't very good but gave positive reviews anyway because they thought they were on some sort of social justice crusade or didn't want to be labeled as a sexist pig?

Yep, video sums it up so well. Pitiful, mindless losers who need to get out more instead of blindly hating something just because.

That happens with pretty much any film critic - even the "pros".

There really should be a huge sign on the door of every liberal arts department that says "If you're not getting a masters you are wasting a lot of money."
