Sorry if this was discussed already, but I just realized J&E Coen are writing a Scarface screenplay. Instead of a Cuban immigrant in Miami (e.g., Pacino/De Palma version), it would reboot as a Mexican immigrant in Los Angeles with Diego Luna possibly playing lead. Although the Coens are probably my favorite filmmakers and gangster is my favorite genre, I never warmed up to Miller's Crossing. But that was 27 years ago and the Coens have matured since then. Due next year, according to IMDB.

I've enjoyed several remakes and am looking forward to both Suspiria and The Beguiled so I'm not a remake alarmist. I take them on a per film basis. And I must say I've zero interest in this one.
Still, to those intriqued, I hope you find it satisfying. |

Doesn't sound like they're gonna direct it. Sources say that Peter Berg is the top choice (the dude who did Battleship. Yay). Besides, this doesn't sound like their type of alley. Scorsese sounds like a better choice, given how much he holds both Scarfaces in high esteem and planned on making a remake himself with De Niro back in the 80s, though at this point, Scorsese shouldn't be doing anymore gangster films, lest he becomes known for only that, even if he's only made 4 gangster films out of his overall 25.

I can name more than four gangster films made by Scorsese: Mean Streets, Goodfellas, Casino, Gangs of New York and The Departed, with Raging Bull falling into a grey area. He also directed an episode and exec produced Boardwalk Empire...and The Irishman is due out in 2018. I would love to see him take on Scarface but it's not going to happen. I agree that he shouldn't be known only for the mafia genre, but he has a unique aptitude with it. Of course, he's a uniquely gifted director any way you slice it. As are the Coens. |

If Berg directs it, you just know he'll find a way to cast Mark Wahlberg in the lead and relocate it to Texas or somewhere where they can sell it to middle America and alienate everyone who isn't in Hollywood's target audience.
In short, he'd throw out everything The Coen Brothers wrote. For a suggestion, I'd go with Jose Padilha but he's doing Entebbe and after RoboCop, he's sworn off working with studios. |
