I don't know if you guys have been taking a cursory glance at AVS, but WOW the posts that are still going in those threads are just pathetic. At first I was reading for amusement, but I just cannot read anymore; it's that sad.
In the general HDM forum now, there are mainly just HD-DVD supporters consoling each other and resorting to bashing the PS3 as a video game console to make themselves feel better. In the HD-DVD forum, there are a bunch of threads proclaiming that Universal, Dreamworks and Paramount need to start releasing ONLY combo discs (No DVDs at all) to turn it all around. There is so much more nonsense in there that it really got me to thinking... Were we that bad when Paramount suddenly jumped ship? I have to admit I was pretty shocked so I didn't really post or read any threads that day, but I definitely never posted any ridiculous claims. |

Well, there was much gloating on the Red side, and much crying foul on the Blu side. And I'm sure some people here were acting in an asinine manner, but still, that wasn't a format war-ending move, and some poise was kept.
This IS the move that makes all the difference. Let the nasty fanboys seek counselling, or increase their medication. I'm not going to lose sleep over people who've acted like such incredible idiots these past few months -- but I'm not going to gloat over them either. They've suddenly become irrelevant. And good riddance. |

When Paramount bailed, of course we were livid etc. Our reaction was understandable. In fairness, the reaction of HDDVD camps is similarly understandable. Warner bailing was, for all intents and purposes, a death blow to them, and then know it. They're forced into the acknowledgment that they now have a player that will, soon enough, will be archaic. For them to continue to enjoy HD support, which most will want to do, they'll be forced to purchase another HD player now. The same thing happened to everyone that bought a Beta player 20 years ago. That's the risk you take sometimes.

Sometimes I am amazed by the optimism shown by HD-DVD supporters. They believe they can lose all studio support and still keep going. It could also be called stupidity, but for the sake of this thread I will call it denial. I was reading threads about how they can't believe this happened, but once Toshiba makes an announcement then we'll see who's in trouble. All the signs were out there that Warner was going Blu exclusive and they were too dense to believe it. A lot of them were saying "didn't Warner just deny these rumors"...as if they were going to come out with them before they were ready.
I was also irritated by Toshibas comment that they were disappointed that Warner ignored the momentum that was on the HD-DVD side...that is such bull. I should be so happy, but these freaking people and their stupidity are driving me crazy. Some are even conceding the defeat of HD-DVD, but they say that Blu-ray will be dead shortly as well with Downloads coming to take over...What do they have against Blu-ray anyway...it's freaking awesome!!! |

There is a difference in how "we" were supposed to react to the paramount deal VS the Warner changing sides. Warner chose after carefully considering what the consumers wanted - Paramount chose to be bribed into lieing about the lesser format being better for everyone. Not only were we shocked by the insane descision to go HD-DVD by Paramount, but also all the BS they pulled. "HDi is so good - we never really understood how we should hire any of the 10 million java coders out there to do BD-J which is btw not as powerful" I hope they are crying right now, CRYING |

AVS was an HDDVD strong hold, not to mention in the grip of MS. So it shouldbe no surprise there is a slight meltdown.
The Bland was cracking me up with some of his posts though. |

I don't think BD supporters were as bad. We knew that the only reason Paramount chose HD-DVD was the bung. No other reason. Mr Micheal Bay echoed these sentiment (then withdrew them (presumably under pressure)), before reinforcing them. HD-DVD fanboys will not have this consolation. Sales figures and quality were their Waterloo.
HD-DVD was always yesterdays technology, they should not be surprised!!! |

ugh. downloads. while i don't doubt every studio ultimately wants this, i sure don't. when the time comes where a studio has complete control over my STB and can on a whim alter the downloaded content, remove it, or simply change the terms and conditions for watching it, we're screwed. downloads = DIVX. plain and simple. All that has changed is the distribution method. |

"With malice toward none, with charity for all...."
-Abe Lincoln It's tough to be on the losing side, whether it be real wars, elections, football games, or format wars. All too soon, some new technology will sweep in and brush away all that came before it. But, for now, we succeeded with the better format, the better product, the best technology that is now available. And we have every right to be pleased and content. Good work all. The other side can only envy us our success. Losing was never really in the cards for Blu-ray. -Greg |

Yes, when Paramount and Universal eventually become Blu-ray exclusive, and Toshiba are selling off their remaining stock of obsolete players for $5 each, they'll still be going on about how their format is a better price-value proposition, has momentum, blah blah blah.
