I asked this of Bill Hunt in the insiders forum. But, wanted to see what the posters here thought. Anyway, I have read that the main reason the Weinstein company hasn't released on blu or even hd-dvd (lately) is that they don't have the money to do it. So my question is this. Should the BDA help with either cash or discounted replication fees to help them release on blu? Maybe, have them release a movie that was never produced for hd-dvd.

From what I understand, the BDA was willing to help but then Weinstein pushed to far. I believe these details were provided by Penton or Maxpower in our old Insiders Thread.
The BDA offered to give Weinstein money to go Blu-ray exclusive. That was agreed to in principal. Then Weinstein came back and said, "we'll take the money to go Blu-ray exclusive AND we want more money to actually RELEASE titles on Blu-ray." The BDA at that point basically said "hell no" and the deal fell threw. So I blame this all on Weinstein; they are hurting financially so it makes sense they want to keep pushing for cash but common guys. |

Having Weinstein wouldn't really help drive consumers anyway IMO, so as long as they still aren't releasing HD-DVDs, than they aren't hurting Blu in any way either. |

BDA shuld not have to give money to them thay shuld offer suport as far as layouts and manufactureing... Id love to see grindhouse and many others on blu but sofar the Co. has no plans of any blu..
Fell free to voice your oppinion about how you want some of the moves on blu and be nice about it. Sarah Levinson, of The Weinstein Company, 212-941-3875, sarah.levinson@weinsteinco.com ![]() |

Weinstein is it's own entity. It was founded by ex-Disney/Miramax producers Bob and Harvey Weinstein. This is why you see guys like Kevin Smith and Quentin Tarantino doing business with them, as they used to go through Miramax for thier films.

How about this? Disney tells the Weinsteins that if they release Grindhouse and Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair on Blu-ray soon, then Disney will hold off on releasing Kill Bill 1 and Kill Bill 2 on Blu-ray for a while, so that the Weinsteins will get many sales to people who will only buy whichever Kill Bill comes out first on Blu-ray and will not double dip. Then Sony helps with the mastering. If the Weinsteins turn it down, then Disney moves their Kill Bill versions way up in their queue and gets them out soon. Nothing against the Weinsteins, just business, and Disney would be doing them a favor by offering to let them release their Kill Bill first. Seems like a deal could be reached as long as nobody gets unreasonable.

I have a better idea. Instead of them trying to hold us over a barrel, how about if we/BDA make them an offer they couldn't refuse.
You come on board now or you are out for three years from our format with Miiiiillions lost in potential revenue. How long do you think it would take for the proper decision to be made? Seconds? Same offer applies elsewhere as well. |
