United Kingdom The Film Review (BBC News channel) & Horror Highlights (Horror Channel)

After being away for three weeks (Anna Smith in his place), Mark Kermode is back on this week's edition of The Film Review (shown on the BBC News channel).

I like Mark Kermode. The first time I saw him was when he presented some horror and other controversial films back in the late 90's in a season called 'Extreme Cinema' on Channel 4, or perhaps Film 4 Extreme (an extra channel which used to be on satellite). One of the films I remember he introduced was Peter Jackson's Braindead, which would have been the first time I saw this film.

I may still have it on video (recorded), a half hour programme on BBC Two where Kermode interviewed John Carpenter about the original Halloween. It's possible it was followed by a screening of the film (this was back when the BBC and not Sky showed it usually each October. Before the BBC, the first time I saw the film was when ITV screened it). At the beginning there was a sequence where Kermode was dressed up as Michael Myers.

I did see Halloween as well when ITV screened it one late night - or Granada TV as it was known as at that time here in the north-west. A shame I never saw Kermode dressed as Myers.

Back in the good old VHS days, I remember buying this film in Woolworths. It was released by a video company called 'Channel 5' (nothing to do with the broadcaster). 'Channel 5' actually released quite a lot of titles on video in the late 80's for under a tenner along with another video company called 'The Video Collection'. Unfortunately their Halloween release was truly awful - it was so blurry you could barely see what was going on. I recorded it myself when the film was screened on TV, which was far superior in terms of picture quality.

I've forgot the name of the film now, it was on The Film Review the week before, had 'My Last Day' in the title.

Another film which escapes me, was reviewed on the programme earlier this summer. It had an X-Files-type plot about someone in a small town in the States who had a local radio show. It was being released on streaming only though.

Is there a new edition of The Film Review this week? Usually it's shown around late afternoon on the BBC News channel, but today, even though it was scheduled to be shown earlier, there was something else on instead.

I haven't watched the Horror Channel for some time now, probably because as a horror fan (particularly the older films), I just buy them on Blu-ray or DVD anyway. But they used to put on some classics, including a few Hammer and Amicus titles as I recall.

I can't remember if it was Horror Channel or Talking Pictures TV, but I saw a bit of a Peter Cushing-starring horror film on there called Dr. Terror's House of Horrors (been meaning to get this on Blu-ray, but I'm not certain which is the best release of it).

The first Hammer horrror film I saw was Dracula: Prince of Darkness (a TV screening a long time ago).

I can't remember the very first Hammer film I saw, but I'm old enough to recall the BBC2 horror double-bills from the 70's and early 80's. They used to feature both American and British horror movies, including the Hammer films, and it was here where I would have seen them. As a horror fan from an early age, this was my weekend treat.

The blu-ray release of Dr. Terror's House of Horrors which I have is by Screenbound, however on Amazon UK at the moment, it's only showing up as a DVD. The blu-ray they currently have in stock has a different cover, so I don't know if it's the same label. This is the one I have:

Not seen The Brood in a little while, but I've got the blu-ray of the film released by Second Sight. If you like David Cronenberg's films, this is certainly one to watch.

[Show spoiler]
Only just found out in the last few days that there is a German Blu-ray release of Dr. Terror's House of Terrors, and apparently there are some differences with the transfer and running time, compared to Screenbound's release (haven't yet checked if there is a thread in the Germany sub-forum).

I think the German release is fairly recent. It does appear to contain more in the way of extra features, but I've no idea what the transfer quality is like. It's most probably a pressed disc - certainly all the German discs I've bought have turned out that way, unlike Spanish releases whereby many of them (but not all) are bootlegs.
