This is NOT about "movie downloads" . Sure, it will happen. But hard media is here to stay. Please stay on topic.
I have said it before, "Blu-ray is my last hurrah." While the potential of some movies is not fully realized on BD, there is little incentive to ever upgrade again to yet another new format. Even *IF* 2k and 4k home monitors become affordable, do I want to dip again in a new technology? Isn't it bad enough a number of people dipped for the numberous formats like LaserDisc, VHS, & DVD? Not to mention any number of re-releases. Sure, it's easy to say "never again" when you are holding the best in your hand. Didn't we say the same about DVD? But with blu-ray any new offerings will seem to have diminishing returns. This is high def people. Higher Def may not matter to us. Has blu-ray become the "good enough" technology to outlive all other formats combined? |

When I first started buying DVD I thought the same thing...this is it.
So I think if I'm being honest to myself, YEAH I'd trade up again. Depends on how well my BR upconverts! hehe |

If resolution is the only upgrade, Blu-ray seems to be good enough for the size we have now. Anything larger would be wasted on this size screen.
However, if something like 3D technology or the like was to come around... I might consider an upgrade. But for the size screens we have now, Blu-ray is all you need. |

I dunno. After investing in vinyl, 8-track, cassette, CD, Betamax, VHS, CED, Laserdisc, DVD, and now Blu-ray, by the time the next format rolls around I'm gonna be surviving on Social Security income. Doubt if I could afford the next go round.
'Course, if I start now, I can write up one of those signs for standing on street corners: "To hell with food. Will work for the next Hi Def format!" ![]() |

Absolutely. Higher resolutions, deep color and many other advances I'm not creative enough to even think of.

HVD it is coming...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holographic_Versatile_Disc 3.9 terabytes a disk... we can do some new things with that space.. The HVD also has a transfer rate of 1 Gbit/s (128 MB/s). Last edited by DezNutz; 01-23-2008 at 07:17 PM. |

1440 is 360 more lines than 1080. That should be plenty for any 60 or 70 inch home video system. Beyond that is just overkill and unsupportable natively by blu-ray. I will upgrade again if it remains a physical format that offers clear advantages over what is already available.

Try upconverting anything recorded in SP or LP mode. Not only is the playback quality lacking, the upconvert should suffer as well. |
