Default Warner Not Linked to Blu-ray Sales Gain?

Interesting piece by Swanni. NPD group suggesting that the large shift in Blu-ray hardware sales was not necessarily due to the Warner announcement. But what also caught my eye was this bit

Quote:
NPD said Blu-ray players captured 90 percent of unit and dollar sales for the week, compared to seven percent unit and four percent dollar share for HD DVD, according to TWICE. (The other three percent of unit sales were for dual-format players.)
So Toshiba unit sales were even lower than we understood

Nothing to do with HD DVD players becoming obsolete?

Well, maybe it wasn't linked to Warner; however, it was one of the most fortuitous coincidences going right now....

I also like the coincidence that occurs every second of every day in the history of the world that keeps us anchored to planet Earth. This dude actually proved that gravity doesn't exist and we are merely experiencing constant coincidences manifested as physical anomalies that have the result of keeping us on the ground.

It should be amusing when "The Warner Effect"* kicks in then.

The Warner move is linked to Blu-ray sales gain. Things don't go from 60/40 to 90/10 overnight for no reason.

OK, maybe 'special promotions' accounts for the 43% Blu-ray player increase from Wk.1 2008 to Wk.2. I'm sure that some of the increase will be down to TV/Player deals (weren't these deals in place in week 1 though).

But what is it that caused the 88% DROP in HD DVD player sales over the same period. Was that a lack of special promotions?

If you're going to come up with reasons for the increase then you have to come up with reasons for the decrease as well.

Different argument. Same logic.

Gravity may not be the reason that the Earth orbits the Sun.

Their conclusion is that Blu-ray bundles with tvs account for the massive shift. That makes zero fuc*ing sense. The biggest change was the freefall of HD DVD players from 14,558 to 1,758.

Quote:
According to NPD Group, 21,770 Blu-ray players were sold during the week ending January 12, compared to just 1,758 HD DVD players. (Sales of Play Station 3 consoles, which have Blu-ray players inside, were not included in the study.)

In the week prior to the Warner announcement, Blu-ray sold 15,257 units compared to 14,558 for HD DVD

I think the point being made was that while the plummeting HD DVD sales was likely caused by the Warner announcement, the uptick in Blu-ray player sales was largely explained by the "bundle" deals being offered by retailers that week (free BD player with certain HDTV purchases).

Keep in mind, Blu-ray players didn't sell THAT many more units. HD DVD players did sell that many fewer units.

I went back and read the thing again. It's a really poorly written piece. They can't make up their mind whether they want to talk about the specific smallish increase in Blu-ray players or the big picture 90% dominance.

An insider at AVS said that the total sales of blu did not rise on the 85:15 week, rather HD DVD just didn't sell.

It's hard to compare week to week at some times of the year. The week before could have included lots of xmas gift cards or other things like that.

This is all statistician double talk. Technically you cannot directly correlate increased sales of Blu-ray players or decreased sales of HD DVD players (or both) to Warner Brother's Home Media Division's choice to enter into Blu-exclusivity but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that market attitudes in consumption is not just mere coincidence.

I thought the numbers posted by Bill Hunt proved that wasn't true. Am I misinterpreting his numbers?

Quote:
For the record, we've just posted (over at The Bits) the actual NPD Group unit sales numbers the charts we created were based on. Again, these don't include the PS3 or 360 add-on.

January Week 1 (week ending 1/5)...

Blu-ray Disc - 15,257 units
HD-DVD - 14,558 units

January Week 2 (week ending 1/12)...

Blu-ray Disc - 21,770 units
HD-DVD - 1,758 units

And here's the month of December (weeks ending 12/8 to 12/29)...

Blu-ray Disc - 115,132 units
HD-DVD - 76,148 units

There has never been a jump or even a gap in numbers like this ever before!
It was no sale...

I would sooner believe Hunt than Swanni. Swanni has made so many predictions, often countering his own predictions, that he seems like a bad psychic... making it up as he goes.

Some more (and pretty interesting) info in this twice article...

twice npd article

Quote:
Leading brands in the category during that period were: Sony (34 percent unit share, 32 percent dollar share); Panasonic (27 percent unit share, 30 percent dollar share), Sharp (23 percent unit share, 22 percent dollar share), Toshiba (7 percent unit share, 4 percent dollar share), Samsung (6 percent unit share, 6 percent dollar share) and LG (2 percent unit share, 4 percent dollar share).
Quote:
Representatives from Toshiba and the Blu-ray camp did not return calls for comment as this was posted.
Quote:
The data was gathered from NPD’s Leader Panel of High Definition Retailers, which does not include point-of-sale data from Wal-Mart, NPD confirmed, although some industry observers told TWICE that Wal-Mart was probably not a big factor in the sales of HD disc players during that period.
Quote:
According to NPD, for full-year 2007 HD DVD player sales accounted for 49 percent of unit share and 37 percent of dollar share, while Blu-ray Disc players accounted for 49 percent unit share and 58 percent dollar share. Dual-format players accounted for 2 percent of unit share and 5 percent of dollar share.

Oh, yes, of course - Warner's decision had nothing to do with it!!! Blu-ray just magically jumped 20 % points in two weeks all by itself.

Said it before, say it again. Ignore the so-called "Swanni" and anything he reports on. He is a TOOL of Galactic proportions and waffles more than Eggo's. Any guy that repeatedly tries to convince people to bestow upon him a nickname HE made up is a Leh-hoooser of Costanza proportions...

Grrr...

Doc.

PS: No, I did not arrive at the nickname 'Doc' myself. It was bestowed upon me by others...
