O.K. I know this sounds "noobish" but what are my options for surround sound with this model player? Can I get Dolby True HD or DTS HD-MA with this model? If so what do I need to do to do it? What type of reciever would work best? Looking at Onkyo 705 receiver.

Without it, you'll be with the basic Dolby Digital and DTS tracks. |

BD-S301 can only reproduce Uncompressed PCM tracks.
as far as Dolby TrueHD and Dts-HD MA are concerned, that particular player has no onboard decoding nor can it bitstream the lossless audio. Im afraid if you want those capabilities, you will have to look into a new bluray layer. ![]() |

but if you want Dolby TrueHD and/or Dts-HD MA you will need a new player. But Uncompressed PCM should hold you over a while until you ever decide to buy a new player. ![]() |

no just a new player. Multichannel analog inputs will be the same as HDMI.
You just need a new player that can decode TrueHD and HD-MA. LPCM should work perfect already though. Watch Fifth Element, War or Pirates and select LPCM track. |

oh and LPCM is better then DTS HD-MA and Dolby True-HD. LPCM is what they get converted into anyway.

I also have a BDP-S301 with the latest firmware update that is supposed to support the HD audio format (just Dolby trueHD and not DTS-HD?).
My question is that if I'm using a receiver that can decode the HD audio formats will my BDP-S301 supply the signal? Or does the Blu-ray player have to be able to decode the signal as well? I just dont want to go and buy a brand new player if the reciver is going to do the job anyway. Sorry if I sound stupid here, pretty new to this stuff. |
