Greetings All,
I have my PS3 connected to my receiver via a digital optical cable. Under settings, I have BD/DVD Audio Output Format (HDMI) and BD Audio Format (Optical Digital) What setting should I set these 2, Bitstream/Linear PCM? I assume the HDMI format doesn't matter but wanted to ask anyway. Thanks in advance. |

He said that this is connected via OPTICAL CABLE! Therefore, the setting should be set to Bitstream in order to maximize the quality of the audio output. The Linear PCM option will only offer a better audio performance through an HDMI cable.
By the way, since you are connected via OPTICAL CABLE, don't bother choosing the PCM tracks on the film software for playback. You will only get stereo sound. I know, your response will be, "But it sounds like the rear speakers are active when I select the PCM track." I was the same way at first with my old 6.1 surround system. I learned later on that the receiver is essentially faking the back speakers using the signal from the front two speakers. There is no real isolation to those rear channels. It's mostly a balanced offering of the exact same sound through both rear speakers. |

I have 1 more question: Under PS3 Sound Settings: Audio Output Settings: I selected Digital Out (optical) obviously Do I check all boxes that are highlighted and can be checked? Here's what I see: Dolby Digital (Checkable) DTS 5.1 Ch (Checkable) AAC (Checkable) Linear PCM 2 Ch. (44.1 kHz) (Not Checkable) Linear PCM 2 Ch. (88.2 kHz) (Checkable But Becomes Uncheckable When I select 176.4) Linear PCM 2 Ch. (176.4 kHz) (Checkable) Linear PCM 2 Ch. (48 kHz) (Not Checkable) |

nothing wrong with the grammar except a typo of if instead of is. it just seems too many people jump the gun way too often and blow for no reason. just because i mentiond hdmi doesnt mean i was suggesting it. i was trying to explain without going on and on with a big paragraph. seems clear enough with the first word and the period after it i was answering the question. this is why i dont like forums. way too much bashing

no i dont. and its not just this thread and the ignorant overreacting with my post in the first place. its all over. i read it here and else where just because someone disagrees with honest opinions or cant read in the first place the rudeness and attitude is sometimes too much to bear and immature.

It's usually under the Setup or Languages and those menus usually provide an Audio selection. Access those from the main menu or pop-up menu.

1) Dolby Digital & DTS 5.1 Most new and old receivers (old as in DVD era and not laserdisc) have the option to process this. Check this box! 2) AAC ONLY new receivers can handle this and NOT ALL have this ability. Basically it streams the AAC signal to the receiver so that the receiver can decode it. Check if applicable. If you don't know, read your receiver's manual. 3) Linear PCM 2 Ch. (44.1 kHz) (Not Checkable) This is the standard sampling rate of audio CDs. So of course this is uncheckable. 4) Linear PCM 2 Ch. (88.2 kHz) (Checkable But Becomes Uncheckable When I select 176.4) Some receivers have DACs (Digital Analog Converters) that can accept 88.2kHz signal via optical. I believe most new ones (3-4 years ago) do. 88.2 is twice the information as 44.1, if you noticed. 5)Linear PCM 2 Ch. (176.4 kHz) (Checkable) Quite new and not many receivers have this as part of their DACs' specs. If your receiver has this ability and you check this box, all sampling rates BELOW IT is supported. That's why if you check this box, the 88.2 becomes uncheckable because by default it must be supported. 6) Linear PCM 2 Ch. (48 kHz) (Not Checkable) This is the basic sampling rate for video so for playing DVDs and BD, this is the sampling rate used. 16-, 20- and 24- are additional bits of audio info for this type of signal. fuad |

Hi In Relation to the above, I have my ps3 connecting to my sony htsf 1100 via hdmi, the audio and video appears to go through the hdmi(ie when i unplug the digital opitical cable there is no loss of sound)
in the settings i have set to hdmi and automatic, but yet it only choose the 2 linear pcm 2 channels settings to go forward and non of the rest of the massive list including the 5.1 lcm channels, surely it should be tick checking a couple of these aswell for the surround sound, and if not should i be doing this manually instead of using automatic. please help |

Optical cable is your best option and just set it on bitstream. |
