Sony Pictures It Ends With Us (2024)

Blake Lively And Justin Baldoni To Star In Sony And Wayfarer Studios’ Adaptation Of Colleen Hoover’s ‘It Ends With Us’; Baldoni Also Directing

Quote:
EXCLUSIVE: Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni are attached to star in the film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel It Ends With Us, which is currently in development with Wayfarer Studios and Sony Pictures. Baldoni is also set to direct, with Christy Hall adapting the script.

Alex Saks will produce for Saks Picture Company, along with Jamey Heath who will produce on behalf of Wayfarer Studios. Lively and Hoover are executive producing along with Steve Sarowitz, Andrew Calof and Baldoni on behalf of Wayfarer, which is also co-financing. Hall is also producing.

After becoming a “BookTok” cultural phenomenon with more than 2 billion views on her TikTok hashtag, Hoover is currently the best-selling novelist in the U.S. with over 20 million books sold, and she wrote five of the top 10 bestselling print books of any genre in 2022. Published in 43 languages, It Ends With Us was the top-selling print book of 2022, has been on the New York Times Best Seller List for over 90 weeks.

The novel was optioned in 2019 by Baldoni and Wayfarer Studios, who have been working with Hoover, who is consulting on the film.

Lively is coming off her directorial debut with Taylor Swift’s 2021 music video for “I Bet You Think About Me,” which earned her two ACM Award nominations and a CMA nomination. Lively is set to reprise her role in the upcoming A Simple Favor sequel with Anna Kendrick, and Paul Feig retuning to direct. She will make her feature directorial debut for Searchlight with the adaptation of the Bryan Lee O’Malley graphic novel Seconds, written and produced by Edgar Wright, alongside Marc Platt.

Baldoni is known for his starring role on the CW’s Jane the Virgin, but since that time has moved more behind the camera with such films as Clouds and Five Feet Apart among his directing and producing credits. He hosts the Webby-nominated podcast The Man Enough Podcast, which investigates the nuances of masculinity. Most recently he’s added author to his credits, having penned his inaugural book Man Enough: Undefining My Masculinity in 2021 and most recently Boys Will Be Human which is a New York Times bestseller.

Hall co-developed and executive produced the Netflix/21 Laps 2020 series I Am Not Ok With This, an adaptation of Charles Foreman’s acclaimed graphic novel. She recently made her directorial debut with Daddio, which she adapted from her play of the same name. Dakota Johnson and Sean Penn star in the movie, which is currently in post. Hall also wrote the English-language remake of Joachim Trier’s film Thelma for FilmNation and Craig Gillespie, and also adapted Hold Back the Stars for Dan Cohen at 21 Laps and Lionsgate, and Stephen King’s The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon for Vertigo and Village Roadshow. She is also writing the screenplay for The Husband’s Secret, based on Liane Moriarty’s New York Times bestseller and in development at Sony Pictures, In TV, Hall recently served as consulting producer on Apple’s Servant.

Lively is represented by WME, Entertainment 360 and Sloane, Offer, Weber and Dern. Hall is repped by CAA, Grandview, and attorney Miles Metcoff at Yorn Levine. Baldoni is repped by WME.

It's wild to me that Colleen Hoover's books now fill up the shelves in every Walmart and Target across America, replacing the movie sections.

One of my friends is heavily into her books so most likely I'll be seeing this in theatres with her. She's trying to get me to read Colleen's books, but I'm not that desperate for reading material yet.

Also, I believe the lead female character in this book is supposed to be a fresh out of college 23 year-old. That doesn't exactly scream Blake Lively, who would've been 21/22 when her show Gossip Girl first started back in 2007.

Sony Pictures has set a Feb. 9, 2024 theatrical release for the Wayfarer Studios’ Colleen Hoover’s It Ends With Us.

Pic starring Blake Lively and directed by Justin Baldoni is a feature take on Hoover’s best-selling novel.

Logline: Though coming from a complicated past, Lily Bloom (Lively) has always known the life she wants. While living in Boston, she meets neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid (Baldoni) and believes she may very well have found her soul mate. Soon, however, questions arise about their relationship, and to complicate matters her high school love interest, Atlas Corrigan (Brandon Sklenar), comes back into the picture, putting her relationship with Ryle in jeopardy.

Christy Hall adapted the novel. Pic is produced by Alex Saks, Jamey Heath and Hall. EPs are Lively, Hoover, Steve Sarowitz, Andrew Calof and Baldoni. Jenny Slate and Hasan Minhaj also star.

As Deadline first reported, It Ends With Us production was paused due to WGA pickets while shooting in New Jersey.

Currently, Lionsgate has their Dirty Dancing sequel scheduled on Feb. 9 next year.

Didn’t the movie have to stop filming halfway through? How are they going to have it ready in 7 months?

The next Hoover to be adapted (by Amazon MGM Studios) is her self published book Verity.

New trailer:

I’m mainly just jumping the thread to say how incredibly disappointed I am in Sony with marketing this film. A lot of women who haven’t read the book are going to go in expecting this romcom where Blake Lively has to choose between two men when it’s further from the truth. Some of these women going in blind will also be domestic violence victims and they will never know before it happens on screen that’s what this film is about.

I find it very dangerous for Sony to leave out this information and let men and women who have experienced such deep abuse and trauma go in blind and be triggered. All so what, Sony can make a few extra millions? It’s really disturbing to me.

Maybe I’m overreacting but I just find them leaving that info out to be careless.

Based on that 1 minute TV spot, yes. The full trailer I saw before Deadpool & Wolverine was quite clear about the domestic violence angle.

I was also taken aback, once again, at how out of touch I am with current popular culture. I've never heard of this "worldwide phenomena". At least I knew the story behind My Penguin Friend whose trailer also played in front of the showing of D&W that I saw.

This is correct. The trailer left no doubt that the film is about domestic abuse.

Went into this knowing almost nothing about it and quite enjoyed it. I liked that they gave nuance to the situation and treating the characters like real people. Glad to see its performing well at the box office, this is what we need more of. Good solid, mid-budget movies that don’t need massive returns to make a profit.

Just got back from taking mom. One scene I didn't get was
[Show spoiler]the hospital visit after he raped her. She didn't want the kit done for obvious reasons and didn't seem to be there for the bite so why did she go?
And what a great scene when she
[Show spoiler]told him the child's name and immediately that she wanted the divorce then runs down what he did to her.

Reynolds Mom was hilarious....I love the fact she's wearing a wrap around her knee....no pretense....just like a reg Mom, whose son happens to be Ryan Reynolds.

That dress was a "nod" to Britney Spears' dress she wore at an awards show.

Woah, a $24m opening day.

That's kinda crazy...I take it this book was a big deal when it came out?

Edit - OK, just read that she's the biggest selling author in the US. That clears that up.

I see the blu-ray is up for pre-order but this should get a 4K release too, right?
