Default Difference between 1080i and 1080p unconversion?

I know this is primarily a Blu-ray forum but I'm sure I'm not the only one here with a big collection of DVDs that will not be replaced for a long time if ever. Because I love anime, foreign films, kaiju eiga, motorsports DVDs, and other non-mainstream stuff I have hundreds of DVDs in my collection that will be around for a very long time.

So that being said, having upgraded recently to a 52" Sony XBR4 I want my DVD player to do my TV justice but currently I have a Sony upconverter that's only 1080i. With the relatively cheap prices for good 1080p units now is the difference in PQ worth the 80-100 bucks for a new player? If you think it's worth it then would you recommend a particular model (I'm partial to Sony but will consider other good brands and don't really need a multi-disc unit if that helps).

In case you're wondering I have a PS3 for BD duties but would prefer to have a separate player just for DVDs.

Thanks for any input!

Yeah, If you have a PS3 you already have the best 1080p upconverter

Thanks for the replies but like I said, I want a separate DVD player just for DVDs. I know the PS3 does great at 1080p upconversion but I'd rather have a separate DVD player - it's just my preference since I watch DVDs A LOT and play video games A LOT so I'd rather not have my PS3 doing both chores and being subjected to more wear and tear.

So going back to my original question, anyone have any input on whether a 1080p upconverter is worth it over a 1080i?

why not just try upconverting a dvd on your PS3 to 1080p and compare that picture with your 1080i dvd upconverter. that way you can see for yourself whether or not it is worth upgrading to a 1080p dvd upconverter. my guess is it won't be worth it

Im sure the PS3 could handle being played on and watched on. Its a 400-500 dollar system I hope it could handle that wear and tear.

Hate to say this, but you might find a Toshiba XA-2 for a good price in a fire sale soon enough. That makes a brilliant DVD player and 1080p upconvertor.
