Default Feature films shot in HD

Good question:
Can someone please come up with a list of all feature films that were shot using high definition (HD) cameras?

Thanks,
Jodi

If you go to IMDb.com, you can look up a film, check it's technical specs and there should be a link that'll take you to all other films shot using the same type of camera or photographic technique. There are different types of HD cams.

Of titles currently available on Blu, Superman Returns, Click, Corpse Bride, Monster House, Ultraviolet were all shot in HD. I'm sure there are others, but those are some that come to mind.

Do you mean a digital high resolution camera as opposed to a 35mm film camera since film is High Def ?

If answer yes, 7 that quickly came to mind : Click, Superman Returns, Corpse Bride, Sin City, Return of The Sith, Spy Games, Attack Of The Clones. The last two were done with cameras with only 1440 width resolution instead of 1920.

Is there a link somewhere for that because I had read that the digital resolution for Star Wars episodes ii and iii was shot in 1440p Extreme Definition, which is 2560x1440.

mmm I don't have the link but this should turn up in google searches, the Sony High Definition cameras used for those two movies were first generation (CineAlta? or something?) and where 1080 x 1440 (and out of that, a Star Wars 35mm Anamorphic 2.39 print would show about 804 x 1440, or less, of those pixels, and a Spy Kids 35mm Flat 1.85 print would show 1040 x 1440, or less, of those pixels. I saw Spy Kids on a 1024 x 1280 DLP TI Movie Theater Projector) (with a 1.5x anamorphic lens I assume to make the 1.25 imager be 1.875 wide)
Roberto Rodriguez talked on industry interviews how he shot Sin City with newer generation (Fuji lensed?) HD cameras that gave him the full 1080 x 1920 resolution. I think Sith also used this newer higher resolution cameras too.

Corpse Bride was shot on a digital still camera.

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow I believe was shot on HD cameras (and much of it was rendered of course).

Rodriguez likes HD and shot Sin City, Spy Kids sequels and Once Upon a Time in Mexico on HD.

Also it was the tape format (HDCAM) that was limited to 1440x1080 I believe - not the cameras - HDCAM SR fixed that issue as well as allowing 4:4:4 colour iirc.

Michael Mann seems to like HD also and shot Miami Vice and Collateral largely on HD as well as some of Ali.

Other films include The Lady and the Duke ... or check this link

Thumbs up

Thanks for the clarification phloyd . I thougth in the old fashioned way of film cameras where the lens and film cartridge is in a body. Digital filmaking is changing all that with lenses, imagers, tape drives, hard driives, disc drives, cables and electronics!

Indeed.

Another 'classic' Digitally shot film is Russian Ark, where it is apparently one continuous shot (though I gather they cheated and it is in fact three shots) and the only way to do this was to capture uncompressed HD directly to a very large and fast hard drive RAID.

For the more imaginative of us, filmaking can be very different from the old days of reels and processing

Monster House? Shirley you jest!

I think the upcoming WB film 330 is shot in digital. There are many more Japanese films that were shot in digital as well - one that comes to mind is Death Note.

Does the fact that some movies were shot using HDCAM color limiting tape give a reason for people building true-to-master BD collections to pickup such titles now?

In other words, HDCAM masters contain 4:4:2/24bit color and the current BD specs support it, so these BDs are true-to-master. Whereas HDCAM-SR masters contain 4:4:4/32bit color and the current BD specs doesn't allow such color, so, imho, you'd better wait on these...
