Default Toshiba: No plans to adopt Blu-ray

http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/19/t...adopt-blu-ray/

Regardless they have no plans now, I still welcome them along with microsoft and the rest of the HD-DVD camp. Would be foolish not to.

As long as they're not standing in the way of Paramount and Universal releasing on Blu-ray, who cares?

Hey... if they really don't want to try and recover their impending revenue losses from todays announcement... let them!

They also had no plans to abandon HD-DVD either... and here we are. Right now they are probably still reeling from the loss. I think that in time they will start making Blu-ray players. It just won't be in the near future.

I think they may pull out of consumer electronics altogether. With SED and HD DVD, that's two big HT endeavors they failed totally at. They discontinued their brand of HT projectors. What do they have left? Regza LCD TVs?

They don't even make good DVD players anymore (an embarassment for the main developers of the DVD format!).

I used to have an SD9200. That thing was a tank.

That is complete nonsense, toshiba has a ton of cash.

They are just getting out of the HD Movie biz for a while, right now the company needs to concentrate on what will help make their investors happy after such a huge loss to the company with 100's of millions thrown away by now. They need to show that they are a responsible company and they will likely enter the blu-ray player market in 09.

Toshiba doesn't have tons of cash anymore, they spend too much on this nonsense and will certainly have to face some serious lawsuits, you can count on that!

You make it sound like losing 100's of millions of dollars seems nothing.

I'm honestly surprised they didn't try to make a dual format player to help HD DVD people transition over to Blu. They could have reaped a good windfall from people who felt they had to continue supporting Toshiba even after HD DVD died.

Even Sony started manufacturing VHS machines. Tosh will come around, probably far sooner than they're letting on.

Nooff, no offense, but you are clueless. Toshiba makes over a billion a year. 100's of millions isnt a drop in the bucket, but it is NOT going to effect the companys bottom line. Period. They took a gamble on HD DVD, it failed, they are moving on. Simple as that. No reason to make it look like a doomsday scenerio for Toshiba, it is nowhere near that.

this is a face-saving measure. they're attempting to save what little face they have left (attempting being the key word) by not joining the winning side immediately.

i think most people find it hard to conceive of them seriously refusing to have a BD player on the market for the 2008 holiday season... and if they don't - no one's loss except theirs, and time for more mocking laughter directed at toshiba.

According to the official Toshiba statement:
Quote:
Toshiba will study possible collaboration with these companies for future business opportunities, utilizing the many assets generated through the development of HD DVD.
I feel that they are going to use what they have developed (possibly HDi) for movie downloads. In the long run, I think this will be Toshiba's attempt to fight back.

Toshiba knew from experience their customer base would not pay their asking price for a dual player. They would not discount the player since the war is over. Just my opinion

As of yesterday they officially had "no plans" to drop HD DVD. So take that with a grain of salt.

They just had to admit defeat. This is a humiliating defeat for Toshiba and it will amount to rubbing salt on the wound to express any interest in Blu-ray.
