I believe in Blu-ray as a format. The PS3 was just icing on the cake.

I would not. From day one I have believed that PS3 was one of the major reasons that BD was able to get so much industry and studio support. I find it very difficult to really believe that HD-DVD will lose the format war anymore because of Microsoft involvement with the format now. X-Box 360 with their add-on really does present a huge impact for the adotion of HD-DVD and while PS3 will greatly affect Blu-ray in a positive manner, it may not even be enough anymore.

The online buzz is still way to strong for HD-DVD. Regardless of whether it is truth or lies, or a line in the middle, it is still very strong for HD-DVD despite all their deficiencies. Without PS3 Blu-ray wouldn't have a chance of even staying alive I feel. This isn't a slam against quality - but marketability.

There is still no question that Blu-ray, who had a fairly wide open door to impress on opening day, did just the opposite and fell VERY flat on its face. HD-DVD wasn't a spectacular launch... but they did far better in those early days to win confidence.

Very true. I would buy BR without PS3, but I do think that PS3 will help put BR over the top.

Yes, eventually but not at $500 for something that only plays blu-ray movies.

PS3 just pushed me to experience blu-ray that much faster. It is awesome

SONY's backing clinched the deal for me to go Blu-ray ASAP but I reckon we will see both Blu-ray & HD DVD co-exist in the market place.

Interesting here in Hong Kong. HMV has a big store here and, a few weeks ago HD DVD dominated with a lot more titles...now it's the reverse. Probably related to PS3 release here?

Many consumers will decide to purchase either Blu-ray or HD DVD based on the range and number of titles that are available. With SONY's PS3 I feel that Blu-ray will be the dominant format but HD DVD will be there somewhere too.

Microsoft would "fund" such opinion polls like this because it helps them with their strap-on case.

The PS3 makes for a faster Blu-ray adoption rate. Without it, average but enthusiastic consumers will have to wait until players priced at US$600 or below to hit the streets. Having the PS3 bolsters the BD format acceptance incredibly fast and early.

Assuming Sony starts to make more than dribble of the things. The PS/3 as a factor only works if lots of PS/3 start being sold. While they are next to impossible to get, the consumer can look elsewhere. And if that elsewhere is an Xbox 360, they may have been lost for a game generation.

Anyone have any indication that there have been any major shipments to North America since the initial release?

Perhaps they are on a boat. But, it seems the Japanese sales and North American sales are now about equal, at about 200K each. That's pretty lousy with a little over three weeks left in this year, and Sony still short by 600K meeting the 1 million goal, which is a 50% cut of the 50% cut of it's initial claim to have 4 million shipped worldwide by the end of the year.

To add to the discourse, the last two major PR pieces about HD-DVD is really not about HD-DVD but about the X-Box 360: the Cymphony crap and the op piece by the head of that PR firm.

It means that winning the console game is more important to MS than helping Toshiba get HD-DVD off the ground.

What you also have to realize is that only two plants in the world are making the blue-velvet diodes - Nichia and Sony. All of Sony's diodes are going to the PS3. EVERYONE ELSE gets Nichia's, and that includes Toshiba's second gen player and the 360 add-on. A Nichia production ramp up would show a small increment of production volumes for other CEs, while a Sony ramp up would be dedicated to PS3s only.

MS must be really worried about the PS3 factor to have TWO PR pieces out within one week.

By the way, did anybody find out about the Taiwanese and HK PS3 numbers?

Nope, the PS3 got me into the Blu-Ray mindset. Otherwise I would have waited it out so PS3 is definately helping Blu-Ray.

I voted no, but that's because of the way the choices were worded.

For me, due to the manufacturer and studio support, and money that these companies have invested in the format, I just cannot see it failing.

So my vote reflects that, although the blu-ray element of the PS3 is a big factor for me, I would still fall on the side of blu-ray simply because of the companies backing it.

Here's an interesting view though, from Time Warner:

Hmmm.

All I know was for the first two shipments:

Launch shipment (November 17)
Hong Kong = 200
Taiwan = 500

Second shipment (November 23)
Hong Kong = 400
Taiwan = 700

I don't know about the rest though

I think I'd buy a Blu-ray player regardless given its wide industry backing and technological superiority over HD DVD. I just think the PS3 is the entry into Hidef & Blu-ray for a number of consumers because its relatively cheap in comparison to standalones, and provides no risk of becoming a paper weight unlike other options.

the poll is kind of one sided... to me the only reason for me to go bd is disney, and I was going to get the ps3 but the reviews are not what most expected. I can play it everyday at walmart... graphics dont seem the greatest, but maybe its just the demo games? already found a glitch in the motostorm game.

What did most expect review wise from the same people that say that Blu-ray movies are not on par with HD DVD titles?

Maybe the programmers have found and corrected that glitch since Motostorm is not out yet. Maybe you should email them just to make sure.

I'm not that interested in computer games. I am interested in high quality movies and computer storage, so even if the
PS3 used a HD-DVD drive it would not change my preferanc.
