Default AT&T UVerse Any Good?

Ok so right now I live in the chicago land area and at&t just launched a new product called uverse which is cable tv through optic fiber and is supposed to just blow comcast away...its fairly cheap right now since its brand new for channels including movie channels and 70 hd channels plus dsl for 120 a month and they include 3 hd boxes and a dvr so i was curious if anyone on here has tried it out and could share some reviews on the product and tell me if i should switch from comcast?

Don't get it if you want to watch HDTV on more than one TV at a time. Right now you get only one HD stream per household, and a total of 4 SD streams per household.

Also, you can't record a HD show and watch something else in HD at the same time, because the recording is using up your HD stream.

Other than that, the internet is good and the residential gateway is easy to navigate if you wanted to make changes.

http://www.uverseusers.com is a good place to go to hear real feedback about uverse.

Sure, no problem.
Just so you know, I don't know when that update will happen. At first we were told Q1 2008, now we probably won't roll it out until Q3 or 4. It will be nice though. That would really cut back on a lot of the complaints I get from customers.

I have AT&T DSL and I hate it. I have the highest package possible and it absolutely blows. I would get U-Verse if it was offered where I am at but it is not here yet. Of course there is no FiOS and I am not paying Comcast $84 for 16 down and 2 up. I hate that in Illinois these two companies have kept Verizon out. Verizon will only launch their FiOS internet if they can offer phone service as well.

Actually, I'm a Uverse tech working for 2wire. (The company that makes the gateways AT&T uses for internet and IPTV.)

Good to know. I have Uverse as well, but SD, so those issues you speak of weren't prevalent in my case...but they will be soon, so again thanks for the info.

In my case, I love Uverse so far. Coupled with AT&T's CallVantage service (internet phone), I have everything (TV, Internet, and phone) for like $84 (including tax). I think it is awesome thus far, no complaints.

A product seriously not ready for prime time. Take my word on this.

Your world delivered...may be 5-10 years from now. FIOS is way beyond UVerse.

A Just-in-Time topic. I just signed up for the U-Verse service, but I really don't care about the TV side of it, since I do NOT watch TV.

I exclusively watch Blu-ray/DVD, however.

As far as the internet service, especially with the 2Wire router they provide has some problems, especially when dealing with VPN, which I require for work.

I will probably cancel the installation today, because, right now, I don't see any advantage over the AT&T DSL service I have.

You do have the option to use wireless... AFAIK the router/gateway they provide has that capability.

Do what I did when Uverse was available in my area, call Comcast and say that you want to set a date to cancel, they will ask why, tell them you are switching to Uverse because they gave you a better price, then usually Comcast will match or better the offer you get from Uverse.

That is what happened to me, now I get all channels+HBO ( but not the other Premium movie channels which I don't care about since I have BR), their fastest broadband and Phone service, 1 HD DVD, 1 HD Box and a SD box for $135.00 a month.

Comcast has been great in my area ( Michigan) and have been adding a lot of HD channels lately, by the end of the month we should have about 8-10 more (two Disney channels, AMC, MGM, Nickelodeon, Spike, Fox Business and a couple of others I forgot were).

You might also want to compare how many HD channels each service has before switching also.

I just switched from Comcast to Uverse two weeks ago. I get more channels AND high speed internet for less than Comcast.

The BIG shock was when I hooked up my DVD recorder. By using the HDMI port on the Uverse box, ALL OTHER video outputs were disabled. I am going to have to connect to my HDTV through component, so I can also use my recorder.
