They've lost everything they bought on the PSN then no? I'm pretty sure that's the case, but i needed to make sure

No, that is not true. You can add your online account onto any PS3 (assuming you remember the master e-mail account and password), and re-download everything you purchased from the PSN.

You are allowed to download each item you purchase on the PSN 5 times.. so in your case they would of already downloaded it once for their old PS3, now they can re-download everything again on the newer upgraded PS3..

You can go into your account and see your past downloads and download them anytime you wish. Not sure if they eventually will take them away, but I recently did this myself...

You can download things from your download list in the Account Management up to 5 times on different machines.

Have your friend click on "Download List" and he'll be able to re-download all of his games.

Also you can download these things an infinite amount of times, but only on 5 different systems maximum.
