Default Defintive Technolgy Mythos or other question

I'm planning on getting a Harman Kardon 754 Receiver in the Us when they are released. I'm looking for great speakers to compliment them, and the Definitive Mythos line has caught my eye. Before I begin, I must note that the left side of my TV room has no wall, so Bipolars are not an option )or I should say- are not the best option).

I've also looked at Klipsch Reference and Paradigm monitor, as well as some Mirages (I can't remember the line). I must say, they all sounded a little "tinny" to me compared to the mythos, but I did listen to the mythos under different conditions.

I'm looking to do this slowly, and spend about $2500 in the end give or take.

I'm just looking for opinions on the Definitive mythos line or whatever else I should be looking at.

The one thing I noticed about the mythos- they do lack that low peak- you must have a good sub to compliment them, and to be honest, I would only go with a system that has a good sub (not a fan of using towers with built in subs). They are very neutral though, which will go well with the Harman Kardon I plan on getting with its warm sound (as long as the crossover is properly set obviously). With a supercube working in conjunction, they sounded superb with my source material (I was listening to Lordi for those who are priveledged enough to know them).

Ideally, I would want:

2 Definitive Mythos Ones (Fronts)
1 Definitive Mythos Three (Center)
4 Definitive Mythos GemXL (Surrounds)
1 Defintive Supercube (Not sure which one)

Aside from hearing about other speaker brands, I would also like to hear from definitive owners if its better to go with the Gems or the Table speakers (like the 2's or 4's).

Thanks alot guys, I'm a speaker noob and can use all the help I can get.

B&W makes a great speaker. I looked at the Definitive but went with the B&Ws. For the price you get a more refined speaker.

683 front
685 surround and rear
HTM61 center
ASW610 subwoofer

After negotiation you should be able to get the set for under $3000 before tax.

Oh, don't get me wrong, paradigm makes sweet speakers... but I was looking at the Monitor line which I wasn't impressed with. The better lines, which sound really good, are a bit out of my price ranage.

I've heard really good things about the B&W's... I think I'll go and give them a listen this weekend. Thanks for the advice.

It's funny... I really am a speaker noob, and to this point I've relied on HK HTIB's (my HK HKTS8's sound great), but I've been yearning for better, and now that I've saved a bit I've noticed how much better things can sound.

Thank you for the suggestion. I believe you get what you pay for, and I really am ready to drop a good amount to get superior sound.

as you may be able to tell from my sig., i absolutely love the mythos line.

i originally started out with two mythos 2's for mains and i've built from there. after the mythos twos, i added a mythos 8 for the center. then i needed some surrounds so i got the gems, the smaller ones. the gemXL are awesome but the best buy i went to didnt have any in stock . after finally getting an awesome setup, i stepped up my mains to the mythos 1's.

all of this is in conjunction with the martin logan abyss sub which im more than happy with, but the supercubes are just amazing.

i dont know, long story short, get the mythos. you wont be disappointed. as long as you have the sub to handle the lows, any of the mythos line speakers will make you smile real big.

also, if you do go with the mythos 1's for mains, i would highly recommend going with either a mythos 8 or 10 for the center channel. both of those speakers have the 5 1/4" speakers that will match the mythos 1's a lot better than the mythos 3.

Exactly the type of input I was hoping for, as my choice in center was a bit "meh." Thanks.

BTW, That's exactly what I noticed... the Mythos by themselves sucked, but with a good subwoofer, sounded better than other speakers combined with a good subwoofer.

more than happy to help man.

if you can afford a supercube after picking up what you want for mains, go for it. ive been searching ebay and craigslist for a couple supercubes myself but they're all just a bit out of my price range right now, especially since i already have a perfectly good working sub. ha.

one other thing to consider also if you do take the plunge on the mythos system, is to let those babies get broken in. granted almost all high end speakers need an ample amount of time to break in, but this applies to the mythos even more. dont get discouraged if you get them home and they sound even more tinny than when you demoed them.

they warm up A LOT after 20 or so hours of break in time. but yeah, reviews on the mythos line are all top notch. its really hard to find someone who was displeased with these speakers

I've got a little of both, I have B&Ws, and a Definitive Technology 14" Reference Series Sub......

I love my B&Ws, but for use for Home Theater, I found other Subs fit the bill a little better.

I have B&W 703s, 705s, HTM7, DS6s, and 686s so if you're looking at any of those, I'll give you my $0.02 but in a nutshell I love them all !

Some people don't care for their sound, so make sure you audition whatever speakers you're considering, as everyone hears a little different.

If you want to stick to a mini-speaker setup, I listened to the M-1's (or Mini-theater) that B&W makes, and again, they sound great, but I'd consider pairing them up with a velodyne or ML sub or something else.....

Good luck!

Consider selling your ML Abyss? I have a buddy who is in the market for the Dynamo, but the Abyss would work out quite nicely for him!!!

DEF TECHS ARE GREAT FOR MOVIES AND MUSIC, BUT YOU HAVE TO HAVE A GOOD RECIEVER AND GOOD SUBWOOFER TO GO WITH IT. B&W SPEAKERS ARE NICE LOOKING BUT NOT ALL THAT, IN MY OPINION, THATS ALL ITS JUST AN OPINION NOW

You can save a couple of dollars if you go with the promoniter 800 instead of the mytos gems. It would free up some money for a supercube. You can get the 800s for $100. a piece.

I previously had Energy Veritas 2.8 and loved them but when I moved I sold the Energys and at new location purchased Mythos 1's for fronts, Mythos 3 for Center, Mythos 4's for surrounds and Mythos Gems for rears. I have a Super Cube 1 with the system.

I am really please in all respects with this system. Sound is great and accurate, the sub is enought to shake the place when needed, and the system looks good asthetically. I have the Gems on Mythos stands and the blend in great.

The Mythos combined with my Marantz AVR is very satisfying in all regards and provides a great sound to my ears. As with all systems, listen first but I cannot imagine you will be disappointed with the DEF TECH MYTHOS series.

Good luck and good listening...

eeeeeeeeekkk. ya know, i wouldnt be opposed to selling my abyss.....but since i have zero extra funds currently, i'd have to sell it for atleast enough to grab a used supercube 1 sub, which run like 800$ some on ebay

granted i know the abyss isnt worth quite that much used, so it may be best to check out ebay for some abyss subs. it might be a better deal for your buddy. i've seen them go for 600$ used on ebay

I"m using the Mythos SuperTowers for fronts, Mythos Ones for surrounds, and the Mythos 8 for a center, in the family room. The SuperTowers are overkill, Ones make great fronts, too. But I like having the "subs" built in - while not terrific subs in themselves, the SuperTowers are the full-range speakers from hell.

I tucked in a Klipsch 12" el cheapo sub to help them out - balances out nicely.

I really couldn't get behind the SuperCubes. I saw them for about $800 (I think this was a 10" sub) and really wasn't impressed. Get th e same sound from the Klipsch, cost me $429, but it's bulky as all get out.

In the living room is my JL Audio 13" Fathom. My nieghbors know when I"m home. But that's overkill.

Your choices look good, but I'd think about that sub, do some auditioning around first.

Abyss subs tend to not hold up well. They look and sound great, but I'd be concerned about reliability. I've seen three in showrooms, and all were not functioning well, or at all.
