Default HELP! get sound from ps3 using optical

Ive got a philips lx3750w_25s reciever manual here

http://www.p4c.philips.com/files/l/l...5s_dfu_eng.pdf

Im using the optical connection to try and get sound to it from my ps3 so i can play motorstorm in dolby digital 5.1 etc ive choosen optical on the ps3 sound settings ticked all the boxes ive picked bitstream on the ps3 ive also gone into the recievers menu and picked ALL for all digital connections also selected the source its saying AUX/DIGI and ive got nothing. Can you get in and out for optical as im thinking my reciever could be optical out and if the ps3 is optical out too then that might be the problem? What would i do then can i get a coaxial to optical lead as the reciver has coaxial in.

Well first of all, you have it set to Bitstream which the PS3 cannot do. You need to set it to Linear PCM, and I recommend setting it to auto. Selecting all the options won't do any good as your reciever may not be able to handle them all. Looking at the manual, the only digital input option is a Coaxial Digital Cable, since the PS3 only has optical digital for audio ouput on the back, that is the reason you aren't hearing any sound. I know you probably spent a little bit for you system, but the only other way to get surround sound from your PS3 may be to get a new reciever with an optical input.

yeah thanks for your help ive just found similar things when i looked. So i use a coaxial cable from my reciever to the box then optical from ps3 into the box? would i lose any sound quality? So if i selected optical on the ps3 it would still work do you think? Is this why you think its not working then because im going from OUT to OUT i thought optical was just a connection didnt think it had out and in.I dont understand those adapters do i put that on the end of my optical calbe and plug it into the coaxial it dosent look the right fit the coaxial looks more like a phono connector

Yes you would use your optical cable to the input on box and a coaxial cable fom the output to the reciever's input. The only way for an optical cable to carry the digital signal is to have an output source connected to an input source. The adapter can go on one end of the optical cable which you would put in the coaxial input and the regular end would go into the PS3. I don't know much about the box, but I just read a customer review on amazon.co.uk and the person said the audio would fade out on it. Hmmm.....for right now try the cable with the adaptor, as it is a more cost effective solution, and if it doesn't work you didn't pay too much for it. However if it does, you saved yourself quite a bit of money. Then set your PS3 to optical out and see if it works. Other than these I know of no other solution. We have an A/V mod named Crakinheadz, who may prove of further assistance to you. Glad I could help.

Stop and think about that for a second. If the PS3 could not output a bitstream, WHY THE HELL IS THERE AN OPTION TO DO SO?

It very much CAN output a bitstream, as mine was doing exactly that through an optical cable up until yesterday (when I replaced my old Yamaha DSP-A1 with an RX-V3800). As has been diagnosed earlier, the issue is that the Pioneer 'home theatre' system doesn't have an optical input (which is ridiculous).

Stow123, ignore Darkpoet's suggestions, they're not going to work. What you want is a device like this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...XZACJXHBBFKEVB

When I had mine set to Bitstream it only played in two channel audio, that was why I said it couldn't Bitstream. My fault.

If everything is correct in settings, bitstreaming DD or DTS should still be in 5.1. PCM 5.1 on the other hand would only show up as 2-channel audio, because optical can't carry an uncompressed signal like that (lack of bandwidth).

Make sure on your setting on the PS3, that you're checking off DD 5.1 and DTS 5.1 in your optical settings...I think you'll find it under BDVD settings.

The first problem is that you need an optical-to-coax converter, just like darkpoet said.

Here is a link for one on Amazon.uk.

Secondly, you CANNOT tick all of the boxes. The only boxes you should tick for the sound settings are the Dolby Digital, DTS, PCM 44.1/88.2/48 kHz. The rest are not supported by optical.
