Default Returned XA2 after four days!

I dabbled with an XA2 over the weekend because I was curious about the PQ from the Reon chip. It did look gorgeous, but...

1. When the player is set to 1080p over HDMI, player stops playing when switching to a different input, and restarts when you go back to that input. But I don't get the issue at all when I have the player set to 1080i.

2. Glitchy and inconsistent compatability with U-Control discs like Miami Vice. Watched Vice Sunday night. Overlay menus were sluggish and there was a slight glitching of video very much like early Samsung BD players with DTS BDs. Rebooting the player resulted in smooth, normal playback.

3. A high-pitched distorted squeal sometimes over all output options, including analogs, that can be corrected by rebooting the player or reloading the disc.

4. When I press eject on the remote towards the end of the movie, maybe over end credits, without hitting stop first, the disc stops playing, the display says STOP, but the disc never ejects. Hitting eject again doesn't help. Player is unresponsive. Hard reboot of the player is the only remedy. This has happened a few times.

5. Monday morning, player locked up with King Kong disc when trying to go from Universal screensaver back to main menu. Had to reboot the player.

Came back Monday afternoon, turned the player on and got that high-pitched squeal, like an air raid siren. That was the final straw. So back it goes to Value Electronics, and I'm taking a 5% restocking fee hit.

This is exactly why I'm a B&M guy and will probably never again order electronics online. Nothing against VE-- they were great-- but I always get the lemon!

Unbeliveable.

I guess Toshiba can't improve their quality just yet....sadly.

The same happens to many people. Just look @ the Toshiba problems threads everywhere!
Those players are horrible!

I definitely needed another hardware producer for HD DVD to step forward yesterday for me to give it a go. That didn't happen so it looks like I'll be missing Universal movies for at least another 6 months. I am sorry for your problems, but as I understand it, your problems are not isolated just to you.

Agreed, but it's not Robert, since he's at CES. It's someone else who's just following policy.

Not quite. There are a few others out there with one or more of the same issues. At least one other person has reported the high-pitched squeal; another had the eject issue; and I'm willing to bet that the 1080p HDMI switching issue is widespread, just no one's noticed it and reported it yet besides me.

It's a shame, though, because the PQ and SQ of this player really was terrific. A nice piece of hardware.

Good for you

It’s not a lemon, it's a Toshiba! Actually sounds like that could be a good HD-DVD slogan.

Ah. Too bad. Begs the question : is it Toshiba's hardware or MS' software? If LG could make a bug-less player without HDi, what does that mean?

Too bad that the HD-DVD supporters are left in a quandary. Keep up the fight or join BD and get better hardware and software. Hmmm.

Oh man.

To be honest, the XA2 is exactly the sort of player that would have got me to buy into HD DVD last spring. I've even toyed with idea recently.

But, in the end, one studio isn't going to cut it. And, I too am a lemon magnet. I'm notorious for it in my family.

I'm shocked Toshiba couldn't get a properly working deck out at a premium price, eight months after the format launch.
