Default Spider-Man: Web of Shadows

Published by: Activision
Developed by: Shaba Games
Release Date: October 21, 2008
Genre: Action

Spider-Man: Web of Shadows immerse players in an all-new action-adventure saga that gives them unprecedented control, never before seen in a Spider-Man game. Armed throughout the battle and confronted by an unrecognizable New York City, players choose to play as a heroic web-slinger or a volatile, destructive anti-hero, fighting with or against a vast number of fan-favorite Marvel heroes and villains, switching instantly between sides, and deciding which missions to undertake to save mankind. An all-new combat system combines web slinging and customizable superpowers to give gamers the freedom to fight and explore in a free-roaming, open-ended environment. Battles blend Spider-Man's speed and agility with the landscape, challenging players to master fast moving acrobatic combat, powerful new web-slinging moves and destructive combo attacks, as they take the fight from the streets, up the sides of buildings and onto rooftops.
- IGN

General Features
  • Not-So-Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man – A fusion of web-slinging and powerful combat moves combine to create an unbeatable, all-new fighting system that intuitively blends Spider-Man’s speed and strength with the environment for deadly new attacks and combos. Players can crush an enemy through the momentum of swinging from a flagpole, fight hordes of symbiotes with wall-crawling abilities, or rapidly attack an entire mob in quick succession with the spin of a web. And for the first time in a Spider-Man game, gamers can take the fight vertically and combat foes on city walls, where Spider-Man has the advantage.
  • Anything Goes – At a moment’s notice, players can harness the grace, agility and acrobatics of Spider-Man Red Suit, or leverage the brute, savage power of the Black Suit. For the first time in a Spider-Man game, gamers can switch suits at any time to create devastating never-before-seen combos and finishing moves. Players must decide if saving New York means siding with Marvel’s most honored heroes or its most dangerous villains, as they control how to fight, what abilities to upgrade and with whom to ally.
  • The City That Never Sleeps – Teeming with life, the Big Apple is more alive than ever before in the Spider-Man series. Citizens will either cheer Spider-Man on or run away in fear, depending on gamers’ actions and decisions. Players control whether Spider-Man acts the hero or the vigilante in his quest to save the city, both in turn affecting the course and struggle against the symbiote invasion.
  • Battlefield: Next-Gen Apocalypse – Increased city interactivity and destructibility allow the player to pick up and use anything in their way as a weapon, destroy store fronts, demolish vehicles, and virtually obliterate city streets with powerful attacks. Next-generation technology brings New York to life with realistic textures and animations, as well as an all-new context-sensitive camera system allowing the player to take on enemies and change directions faster than ever before, while adding a new dimension of intelligence and polish to Spider-Man’s actions in the air and on the ground.
  • Who’s With Me? – With some of the greatest heroes and most notorious villains in the Marvel Universe, including staples such as Luke Cage and Vulture, players’ choices control who will ultimately aid them in the fight to rid New York of the alien symbiote. These choices have consequences, as behaving like a hero or like a vigilante will ultimately lead to separate destinies.
  • Extra Credit – As gamers progress, they earn experience in multiple combat disciplines to allow them to custom-design their ideal Spider-Man. Whether players prefer web-slinging to melee fighting, or battling in the Red Suit versus the Black Suit, points are generated that can be used to upgrade the move they like best.
  • Instant Replay – With dozens of story choices and character customization options, Spider-Man: Web of Shadows provides a fresh and exciting gaming experience every time it’s played.

Aren't those the inferior CODs?

I don't know how they went from 2 and ultimate being good to 3 and Friend and Foes being bad.

Hope this one's better as I do like Spidey

Cool! That means it's Treyarch, right? They made the original Dreamcast version of Spider-Man (pre-movies back in 2000), and that game rocks! That one is still one of my favorite Spider-Man games, right up there with Spider-Man 2. That game stayed really faithful to the comics, including a ton of costume variations, characters, and villians straight from the archives.

Treyarch knows how to handle Spider-Man, so I'm already excited for this release. Plus, they won't have to tie into the movie trilogy, so they're free to pick great storylines and concepts straight from the books.

Spider-Man: Web of Shadows Q&A - IGN

Quote:
IGN: Talk about a megaton -- Spider-Man is back! What exactly is happening in New York and ol'webhead's life in this new game? Where do the players fit in?

Graham Fuchs and Chris Scholz: Yes, it's pretty heavy. New York City has been invaded and martial law has been declared. Heroes are gathering uptown to protect civilians, and villains are grouping downtown to repel the aggressors. It's up to the player as Spider-Man to save the city … by any means necessary.

IGN: The first thing that sprung out at us when we looked at the first screenshot was that Spider-Man's got his classic comic book logo on his back rather than the movie logo. Is this story taking place in the comic book canon? Is it after the start of the Brand New Day arc? Are we completely off base and this is its own story all together?

Graham Fuchs and Chris Scholz: You're right; this game is set in the classic comic universe. We've been given a lot of freedom to come up with our own storyline that fits perfectly with the gameplay we've envisioned.

IGN: We realize you're not ready to show your hand just yet, but we all know that one of the best parts of the Spider-Man universe is his rogues gallery. That screenshot of an alien-looking/messed up Empire State Building looks like the work of a serious bad guy. Will Spider-Man's foe in this game be someone he's faced off with before or someone original for the title?

Graham Fuchs and Chris Scholz: There's going to be a lot of Marvel heroes and villains involved in dealing with the invasion. Some are pretty well known, and some are fan favorites who've never appeared in a Spider-Man game before.

IGN: How do the customizable superpowers work? Is it one of those things where the more you use your powers the stronger they get or are there upgrades you earn by collecting coins or something?

Graham Fuchs and Chris Scholz: Through the upgrade system you're going to be able to build the Spider-Man that suits your play style. For example, if you prefer to attack from a distance, you can upgrade more web moves. If you prefer to get up close and personal, you can upgrade your hand to hand combat moves. The player is in control of how Spidey evolves through the game.

IGN: The one thing people always comment on when it comes to the majority of Activision's Spider-Man games is how much fun it is to just swing around New York. What is web slinging like in this game? Is it one button? Do you need to use left and right triggers to choose a direction?

Graham Fuchs and Chris Scholz: The swinging everyone loves will be back, and we continue to make improvements to make it better than ever. We've also put a lot of focus into Spidey's wall-crawling and acrobatics to make his movement through the city more fluid than ever.

IGN: In the past, fighting the forces of evil has had the tendency to get repetitive with Spider-Man just punching and kicking on the ground. What can you tell us about the new vertical combat system?

Graham Fuchs and Chris Scholz: The goal was to recreate the feeling of the battles in the comics that start on the ground, go up the side of a building, and finish on the rooftops. Our combat designer has called this "the most 3D game ever."

Forget graphics lol, read the Q&A I posted. They have a different plan for this one.

Plus, new heroes that have never been on game will be on this one. I'd say that's a cool start.

I think I need to change my Spidey tights. This is exactly the game I was hoping for, and Treyarch can pull it off based on their earlier Spider-man work. This will be great!
