Default Upconverting SDDVD

Ok this is probably a stupid question, but I just got a Sony Blu-ray player as a gift. The BDPS300 (or 301). My problem is, when I put in a SD DVD, my TV (a sony bravia KDL-32S2010 1080i resolution...connected with component video cables) says its only 480p, and I can tell too because the quality isnt so good. I selected the 1080i output on the Blu-ray, but I don't understand why its not getting upconverted? Is it this copyright thing? How do I fix it? Any help would be appreciated

Colleen

Yes it's a copyright thing, no upconversion will take place except over VGA or HDMI

I guess I'm outta luck because my tv only has one HDMI input and I'm using that for the cable box......do you think that the resolution from my cable box would be just as good with components if I was to switch the DVD and cable box. The cable box can send 1080i resolution over components right?

Thanks for all your help guys.........this has been drivng me nuts for 2 days....

Yes it will

You should have put the blu player on HDMI anyway, given the average quality of cable......

You can also buy an HDMI switchbox from Monoprice

Since you obviously know more than I do about this.....what do you think? If the HD channels on my cable won't be deminished by the switch to the components, then it seems like a better solution than the switchbox no?

This board is the best!

Some people use component for the cable box and HDMI for the blu-ray player and they are satisfied with it. Some others use a HDMI switch box and have all HDMI. I would go for the switch box.

I also have only one HDMI input on one of my HDTVs. I use component for cable and it looks fine. You may also consider an HDMI switcher so you can connect both to your TV. I think Best Buy sells one for about $100 that has a remote controlled A/B switch.

You'll definitely want your BR player on the HDMI.

Monoprice HDMI Switchers.

I have been using the 2x1 Switcher for over a year now, no problems.

If you are using an old AVR (i.e. no HDMI) for audio, you may consider a switch with tos (optical audio) switching capability.
