Default Logitech Z-5500 5.1 with PS3

Anyone using the Z-5500 with their PS3? If so, just wondering how good it sounds?

I know this is not a replacement for an actual receiver/speaker setup, but thought it might be a good idea for my 2nd PS3 which resides in my bedroom.

Thanks

Sorry if this is totally a noob question, but I have to ask...

This system is only capable of Dobly Digital, DTS etc.

So what happens if I watch a movie where the audio is in DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1, such as I, Robot?

What would the end result be?

Thanks

Sorry, think i found my own answer in the forums under the Audio secion, first post...

What if I don't have HDMI?

If you don't have and HDMI compatible receiver you can still get surround sound. This can be accomplished in two ways, TOSlink (optical) or Analog (red/white RCA's).

Make sure you set your audio settings to reflect that you are using Optical.
Settings > Sound Settings > Audio Output Settings > Digital Out (Optical)
Settings > BD/DVD Settings > BD/DVD Audio Output Format (Optical Digital) > 'bitstream'

With this selected you will only be able to achieve the traditional "lossy" core tracks from Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 or 2.0 PCM (stereo). If your disc does not list Dolby Digital or DTS alone, have no fear, these tracks are embedded in their lossless counterparts. Choose TrueHD or DTSHD-MA and you will get the core track as long as the settings are as described above.

Funny what happens when you actually look for the answer rather than just posting questions first! :P

All of them don't have DTS. However, all of the DTS-MA DO have the DTS core, which is possibly what I think you meant. (Just to clarify).

I have that exact setup (Z-5550 & PS3) at home and it sounds good. Basically, as good as the Z-5500 can sound.

My friend has a Z5500 hooked up to his PS3 and it's ok. I would say it's better than a number of HTiB.

I have hooked the 360 and the PS3 up to me TV through HDMI and my TV has an otpical out which goes into my logitch Z-5500. I have a one year old 46' Samsung TV, is it not possible to get full 5.1 surround sound through my TV? Currenty even after setting everything I am only getting stereo.

The optical outputs on most TVs are usually there just for outputting the sound from the built-in digital receiver. So yeah, you're probably SOL.

You could get sort sort of a Y-cable though. I'm using one myself on my Z-5500 because I have both my PS3 and my PC hooked up using optical (my DVD player is using coax). The one I have is actually 3-1 so if I ever get a 360 I can hook that up as well.

LOL OMG!!! LOOK at my picture! I had that same problem and it drove me NUTSZIE!! do I buy a receiver and do the whole audio thing, on a college budget, but why? this THX setup is sweet and is so crystal clear and loud for Bluray.... argh what do I dooooo?? I got that switch on the bottom right hand corner above my cable box, and it's sweet! 4 Optical in switching, and 4 1.3a HDMI switching all built in, all digital, and all DHCP compliant, with customizable LED screen so you know what input your on. I am using the harmony 880 remote, so it switches all the inputs for me, automatically, depending on the activity I select for it. I am only using the switch for audio, as I hooked my equipment directly to the XBR but it is the best switching unit I have found without going to a receiver.

here ya go! links below.

this one is the one I have

and this one is component, i dont think it has optical but its an alternate switching solution.

^ That's a nifty piece of kit, but it's more then I was willing to spend. I got my 3-1 optical switch for 6€ (so about $9). It's definitely not as useful as yours though.

For the price you can't beat it, but in all honesty, it looks like garbage, no offense and no disrespect, and with all the expensive equipment we all have, it seems more revelant to have a digital switching device if some kind of IR or RF remote, especially if all your equipment is in a rack or storage cabinet, or far away from the main viewing location. I'd hate to have to, as lazy as my american ass is, to get up everytime I wanted to go from, my DVR, to the PS3, to the 360, or to the computer. But if I am not mistaken, you are using this in your bed room, which in that case is right next to the speaker setup and so forth, so I'm guessing it's perfect for your setup, to each is own, I admire your injunity and good show! cheers!

Sorry for bumping old threads, but I just like to know your level for center and surrounds (just as a baseline) and other "settings" tips for use with the PS3?

Thank you so very much!

Got this z-5500 speaker system for my 2nd projector room.

I'd advise you place the speakers in their correct positions. Approximately head height whilst sitting in front of TV. Then aim them into the middle of the room. Center speaker above your TV aimed in again towards head height middle of room.

The bass from this kit is quite nice, plus you can add effects to the actual sound before it exits the unit.

Do note that the feet of the satelite speakers bases can be spun around. This lets you mount the speakers upside down/under a shelf (well thought out engineering).

Nice idea! Can you give me an idea of a good volume level for center, surrounds and subs?

Thanks
