Default Can't get 5.1 Surround with Blu Ray on PS3, Logitech z-5500

Hey everyone,

I've been doing some research but still have been unsuccessful and would appreciate any help. I currently have a ps3 hooked up to my samsung via HDMI. I have my z-5500s hooked up to my hdtv via optical cable.

The lcd display on the z-5500 does not show dolby digital or dts option, only pro logic II. I went into the ps3 audio option settings and changed the output to HDMI and manually selected the dts and dds 5.1 options. However, the z-5500 does not pick it up. If i change the output to optical, i can not hear any sound because the fiber optic cable isnt connected to the ps3. I tried selecting bitstream on the BD/DVD option as well and I am still getting the blu ray movies in prologic II.

Has anyone else solved this problem or do I need to buy an additional receiver that has HDMI and optical input and outputs?

You won't get DD5.1 or DTS through HDMI only 2 channel surround if connected to your HDTV, no matter if the optical is connected to your TV, it will not pass through the HDMI to the optical on your TV and out to your Z-5500, it just doesn't happen. The only way is to connect your optical cable from the PS3 direct to the Z-5500 and HDMI to your TV and on the PS3 option set audio output to Optical then in the sub menu select DD and DTS options. Hope it helps.

ADstv- I was afraid that was the case. It might be annoying to have to switch the cable back and forth from the TV to the z-5500. I will test to see which audio I prefer, the 5.1 with the fiber optic to the ps3 or the 2 channel surround that the HDMI is currently giving me.

I appreciate your help and thanks again.

can always try to get a switcher that allows you to switch optical inputs so you can connect 3 optical devices to the one optical input, I had the same problem with my old plasma since I had only one HDMI input and 3 HDMI devices, I found it easier to buy a switcher so I don't have to be connecting and pulling out cables all the time.

Have you tried setting your PS3 to Bitstream, and setting the TV to output "Dolby"?

Because TV's do not process Dts, you would be without Dts. So in all honesty, Optical from the PS3 to the Logitech is your best option.

crackinhedz- My TV does not have the option to output in dolby digital.

I connected the optical to the ps3 and the "surround sound" sounds better than it did before.

raw nerve- That is a great idea. I will have to buy another fiber optic cable as well but it will be worth it instead of wasting time switching the cable back and forth. Thanks for everyones help.

I've got some Logitech Z-5500's & i doubt its the speakers fault it won't work. User issue / PS3 sound settings... hope you get it sorted with or without reading the PS3 manual.
