Default Hideo Kojima, the dev behind MGS4 wants tu use 50GB BD disc's for his game

He said this in a videolog at 1up.com.

I hope this is true. This game will ROCK! (even if it will be a single-layer BD)

I could speculate that it will be like GEARS OF WAR TIMES 10. Hi res photo realistic textures for like 6-10 massive levels, ( including super hot japanese models like the previous games ). Sound clips worthy of hollywood blockbusters. AI program better than anything weve seen. Colision/physics engine, Heck maybe they will even include and in game movie " the making of. Dev interviews and the like " you know like a real movie.

I want HD surround sound

Something along the lines of either Dolby TrueHD or DTS HD-Master Audio.

I also vote for super high-quality textures plus Ageia physics (since the Sony hired Ageia to do Physics solutions for the PS3).

Was this the same videolog where he kind of seemed to look down on HD? He said something like it makes the games look like plastic.. so he's planning on making the graphics much dirtier purposfully. It's interesting.. and seems true. Think of 1080p HD games that look very clean(NBA 07, GT HD)-- they almost look too clean and like he said "plastic"-like. I don't mind it myself, but I think it's a good point.

I remember something else being pointed out-- If anyone has seen Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, they made Dr. Cid's face have many many blemishes and wrinkles, and it looked much more realistic than any of the other characters with perfect skin. So dirtying up the graphics will make them look better? I'm interested to see what Kojima does with this.

Mainman-- Do you have a link to that videolog? Did he really say that he was going to do 1080p? That would be AWESOME-- but the thing I saw made him look like he didn't want to do 1080p. He said he wouldn't be able to fit what he wanted on a BD disc.

EDIT: Here is some of what he said:

"We're not the ones who are saying we want HD. I'm not interested, myself, about HD at all. MGS games tend not to care about how clean the screen looks...we deliberately make the graphics look dirtier to give the atmosphere more life"

It could be why Sony included TrueHD decoding out of the box.

1080p was the target for MGS4. Concerning the make the picture dirtier, I trust Kojima in his judgement, he never let me down before.
Kojima is a movie fan, he gets his inspiration from movies. He tries to make his game 'movie like'. You guys remember Escape from New York? The main characters in the movie was Snake Pliskin, the character in the game is Solid Snake, and there are phisycal similarities as well his hair and the Bandana are almost identical.
Plus, the mustache of Snake in MGS4 was modeled after the actor who played, the bad, in 'the good, the bad and the ugly' Lee van Cleef (Kojima said in an interview).

Plus, we all know that cutscenes take up much space, because it is a movie file. This isnt Kojima style.
Kojima always made the cutscenes ingame. Meaning, it isnt a movie file, so it takes less space on a disc. This was so in every MGS game (not sure about MGS1 (for PS1) though). And MGS4 will be no different.
In MGS2, you can change the characters in the cutscenes. And in MGS3, you can change the clothes of the main character, and make him wear a mask. This all happens thanks to real-time rendered cutscenes (or however its named).

And dispite this, he wants to use a BD50 for this game? Man, I dont know, but I think this game will write history (with its size and ingame content). I think, it will be the first of many.

The actors name is Kurt Russel, and the character he played was Snake Plisskin not Solid Snake. However, in MGS2, Solid Snake masqueraded as a Navy Lieutenant named "Plisskin", so we know for a fact that the character from Escape from New York, Escape from L.A. inspired the character of Solid Snake.

Yeah. I've been a huge fan of MGS and I've been playing them since the original Metal Gear. I never knew that 1080p was the original goal. That is amazing if it's happens. With the cutscenes and everything I think it will certainly write history. All the other games were amazing.

Yeah I know Snake Pliskin was the movie and Solid Snake is the game, I was aiming at Snake not Pliskin or Solid, lol. But I edited this, to make it more clear.

When I wrote my comment, I wanted to tell about Iriquos Pliskin as well, but thought, the post would get too long .

And the other actor I was referring to with the 'Snake's mustache' part was the actor Lee van Cleef.

Well, actually I have to correct myself here. I dont know what Kojima's goal is, but Sony's demand for MGS4 was 1080p, so I assume 1080p is Kojima's goal as well.
