Default 'Japan Has Lost' Compared to Western Games says Hideo Kojima

'Japan Has Lost' Compared to Western Games says Hideo Kojima

Quote:
"If you honestly compare Japanese games with Western ones, Japan has lost," Kojima frankly said during a discussion at the Tokyo Game Show last week (Famitsu, via Kotaku). During the talk, Kojima compared the western games industry to Hollywood -- they bring the world's best creators together and give them huge budgets for their projects. He went on to call the current disparity "dangerous," particularly when it comes to how far western technological development has come over the last few years.

I agree. I hope he is including Europe as part of the West also because there are tons of great studios there as well.

Europe is part of the Western World.

Blame Sony.

PS3 has been weak in Japan, PS2 was strong.

Blame companies for accepting bribes from MS. It has decreased their sales in Japan, and therefore the exposure of HD gaming, so the money is now all in DS and Wii.

I disagree
Technically, yes, western is superior but a few selected Japanese studios are still more innovative in terms of gameplay design, concepts.
Sure, games like Gears of War thrive on "good lighting", "nice looking explosion", etc but those games have no souls.

It's like comparing a Pixer movie to a Miyazaki movie (no offense to all Pixer lovers)

Most american games don't have the same play as japanese games. American games don't seem to have the same in depth plot, intricate story lines, great character development. It will be a huge blow to gaming if Japan doesn't get their act together!

We all know what the ps3 needs to come back alive in japan.
MS took all those and it didn't even do anything major for them.
your right, its these dumb ass companies putting all these rpg's exclusive on xbox knowing damn well it will sell more on ps3.
blame MS greedy ass for slowing the ps3's growth in japan.
blame sony for letting it happen.

are you trying say, blame MS for having a competitive and smart business plan on trying to outsell and outperform the competition, no matter what it takes, so that their product thrives and has a better appeal?

yea, those silly companies and trying to outperform and outsell competition. what kind of business is that anyways?

I agree with Mr peepers

If we distance out from owners & gamers & look at it business wise, Microsoft is trying to win against the competion

In any business, companies will try & beat their competion like Microsoft has done in the software business, in essence, they made it so in the computer world, if u want to have most of the computer related stuff, you would have to buy what i like to call the 'software soul' of a computer, the OS, from them

More stuff than any other is compatible with a Microsoft OS

If they can make it so they have the majority of the good games in relation to the games industry, they essentially position themselves at the top & people would have to buy their console if you want the good games

Kinda like their OS in the software industry, almost essential if intending to play majority of PC games

Thankfully Sony is not at a complete disadvantage yet & will hopefully turn this around themselves

The only effect the above has on me is that i feel the PS3 is the superior games console in terms of hardware quality & functionality as a media hub that it has given me & good build quality

If the games were on Microsoft, the hardware is inferior & a problem if they keep breaking down when i try to play those good games

If your idea of a smart business plan is to knowingly lose 10 billion bucks on 2 systems combined trying to force a product on a market that doesn't want you in it (ie. How Japanese gamers view XBox), then I suppose we shouldn't blame them. But I do. They lost all that money, and many of their moves have been made not to be competitive or make money, but so the guys running that division can make fanboyish press statements and say "we have this on our system". Long term, accepting MS bribes is damaging to a franchise. I may seem biased to some ppl here, but I'm like some kind of MS fanboy compared to your average Japanese gamer.

dude, you missed his last line, which kinda was his point. Blame Sony for letting MS run away with it. I think you took what he said out of context.

I'd say that about American games but some European/UK games can match Japanese as far as that goes.

Japan has lost its identity thats all.

Take Sega for example. Do we like Daytona? Yes we do, do they give us Daytona? No.

What do Sega try and do? They bring us Sonic, AGAIN!

Its not the games that are losing, its the stupid idiotic decisions the Japanese are making. Hardly any of them listen to their fans anymore. I could single handedly make up a list of 20 to 30 things the Japanese games devcos could do which would turn this around in a year.

I personally believe most Western games are far too complicated to be fun. I don't have 18 months to get into WOW and I don't like FPS games with complicated button configs. I certainly am against unprovoked videogame crime (GTA), So there is definitely some room for the Japanese for me.
