Alright ... I got a PS3 ... was so pumped to try out the Blu-ray movies from reading all of your guys comments on here about how great it was. I went out and bought Pearl Harbor for my first Blu-ray. Either I am going blind or I cant tell the difference between the Blu-ray version and the dvd version. I know its crazy. I have a 32 inch LCDTV hooked up to my PS3 via HDMI. I dont know what is wrong with me but I cant tell the difference. I could tell the diffence in my games when I went from composite to hdmi but not the movie. Is it Pearl Harbor? Or am i just going crazy. I just rented Training Day on Blu-Ray and I am going to go watch it. Maybe Ill have better results.

Is your LCDTV even an HDTV? If it’s not over 480p you probably won’t see any difference.
Blu-ray is for people with higher-end sets(720P-1080P) |

Also, when you first plugged in your PS3, did you go through the initial setup and choose all resolutions to display? It may have defaulted to 480 for some reason? Also, make sure you download any firmware updates too. I heard some units were having some scaling problems that might be fixed by one of these?

To see the maximum quality of Blu-ray you need a 1080P display that is over 50 inches wide. 60 or 70 inches would be ideal. Anything less then 50 inches you will need to seat closer to the TV screen. Your 32” inch screen most likely is a 720P. DVD is 480P and if you have a 720P monitor you should see the difference if you seat close enough. If you had a 1080P Sony Front or rear projection with 2.5ms response time and 15,000:1 or 10,000:1 contrast ratio would help. Rent some dual layer 50GB Blu-ray discs also. Even on my parents 37” 1080P Westinghouse monitor I see a big difference between 480P DVD and 1080I D-VHS. They don’t have a Blu-ray player on that display yet.
P.S. What is the model of the 32" monitor. It most likely is not 1080P. |

I don't know of any 32" screens that can do 1080p.
My 40" bravia was the smallest 1080p that you can buy. |

Correction I got my models fixed up. Your TV is a 720P LCD. Here is the link to the specs if anyone is interested.

Also Dell/Apple/Samsung/LGPhillips do their 30" HD cinema screens with HDCP/HDMI input at 2560x1600. Computer monitors can do ridiculous resolutions though. |

I wish i could return it. No extended warranty. I could maybe sell it for 750.00 or so. Man i should have done more research ... i was just trying to make sure it was HD wasnt paying attention to 720p/1080i stuff. I have been regretting getting the small 32in anyways.

If you are in the market for a new HDTV monitor the cheapest 50 inch 1080P rear projector buy Sony with a true 1080P input can be purchased for $1,588.79 as a final delivered price.

That makes it close to DVD in resolution (although you should notice better colour, and a cleaner picture than DVD). The same thing pervades 1080p sets, and they are significantly more expensive. Does your set accept 720p input (the spec linked above seems to imply this is so)? That would be the best output from the PS/3. Gary Last edited by dialog_gvf; 01-14-2007 at 02:21 AM. |
