Default Help? Why should I upgrade my existing DVDs to Blu-ray...MY SETUP

without going into too many details, i have a 139" screen, projector system 10,000:1 ratio...

anyways, my blu-ray is a ps3
i have watched the same movie on dvd (upscaled thru ps3) and blu-ray, i can not tell any difference, i sit about 13-14 feet back

just want some opinions? why should i shell out $20-$35 upgrading dvds?

like independence day? etc...
they look just fine (even before upscale), but i can't tell much of a difference, and is it really worth the $, i do by all new movies (like i am legend on blu-ray when cheaper than $25 at amazon)

Need a little more information to give you a helpful answer. Let's start with what movie you watched in Blu and what make and model projector you have.

Also, do you run a sound system capable of HD audio? Blu-ray is about more than just the picture.

It plays HD audio. That is if the blu-ray has hidef audio (a lot of warner movies don't have hd audio). Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master HD audio are decoded internally thru the PS3 to PCM. All you need is a receiver that is capable of pcm to receive hd audio with the ps3. What is the resolution of your projecter?

Wrong. If your PS3 is all updated, set it to Linear PCM and you'll get ALL the codecs via HDMI.

Also... what resolution are you watching at? It's possible that between your pj setup and your eyes you may not discern a difference. That's a fricking huge screen though.

Set the PS3's audio to output via HDMI as Linear PCM. It's in the XMB (cross menu bar GUI).

10,000:1 is your contrast ratio (which is really good) but it's not the resolution. I'm assuming it's 1920x1080 with a contrast ratio like that but you may want to check what the PS3 is sending and what your pj is outputting.

again i was told that 50" or less well be MUCH easier to see since pixels are condensed to small space, 139" is spread out

BELIEVE ME PIC LOOKS AWESOME, but does not the ps3 upscale to 180 too, it may be 1080i but still looks GREAT and can't tell

A lot of people will disagree with me on this forum but I would say it is absolutely not worth the money to upgrade all of your DVDs. Personally I would rather spend the money elsewhere. Now, if I had a couple of my absolute favorite movies that i just had to have in Blu Ray, I would probably spend my money upgrading those, otherwise I would just continue to build my blu ray collection through the purchasing of new titles. That's just me though. But I mean, if you are saying you can't really tell the difference yourself, that is your answer right there. So why bother...

thank you, that is exactly what i was doing, i guess i just didn't want to UNDERuse my system, or miss something

BUT does not the upscaler do a great or very close job?
i appreciate your responce, and i am sure there are small differences, but the upscaler should help (or so i thought, but sound s ike i am wrong)

I'm getting the distinct impression that you do not have something set up correctly in your system if you are claiming you see no improvement watching blu-ray versus upscaled DVD's. I assume you had this system installed for you? (I say this, because based on your posts, you do not appear to have a good working knowledge/understanding of your set-up. If I've misinterpreted, I apologize ) If it was installed by someone, I would call the installer back out and "fix" whatever needs fixing.

As for upgrading your collection to Blu? I've got several hundred DVD's in my collection, and I am only upgrading certain ones to BD in addition to only purchasing new movies on BD moving forward. I say that, but I can't seem to help myself when I find a good deal on BD that's been posted here! It's very addicting (and I don't buy unless I can get it for <$15), but I TRY to keep my upgraded BD's to only movies that I truly love.

Good luck, and welcome to the forum.

i used to do all my installs and equipment, but do to rapid changes and building the room just for this, i let the installers do it, and i do not know my system well, because honestly i switch it out every 6-8 months LOL, which is crazy

anyhow, i can assure you that ps3 and pj says 1080p, so not sure, sound is different never gotten anything but 5.1 DD, if upscale scales up to 1080, why would there be a big difference especially in new movies like sp2 sp3

i do appreciate everyone's honest input
it helps, and makes me ask ?s

first of all.... an upscaler will NEVER make a normal DVD 1080i or p..... it can't make images/material that weren't there in the first place.... it just adds filler.....

second... if you can't tell.... then I'd get it calibrated.

if you still can't tell, then by all means, buy DVDs, although I could care less about Picture quality really, and I buy Blu Ray for the improvements in the sound quality.... which are pretty significant on my system.

With the Onkyo 805 you should definitely be getting HD audio- not just the DD 5.1. Make sure it's outputting via HDMI and not optical. Check over your setup. Either the track just isn't being selected or there's a setting wrong.

Also, 1080p upscaled != true 1080p content. You can't add what's not there to begin with. It can improve it and make it look better, no doubt, but it's not the same. Try blowing up a tiny .jpg into a larger image and you'll get an idea of what's going on. Algorithms and smoothers can only do so much.

because you want to see them again. If you don't then don't bother. But better audio, better picture, why not go with it.
