Default Pioneer Elite Rec. and ps3

I was thinking of buying a ps3 for BD primarily. But after reading about the audio outputs I don't think I should. I just purchased a Pioneer Elite VSX-90TXV A/V REC. thinking i could always use the optical in for any audio. Will a stand alone BD have 7.1 uncompressed bitstream audio or is it always going to be on HDMI ? I've put alot of money into my speakers and just don't want to use the compressed optical outputs of the ps3. I did a comparison to my upconverting Sony dvd, DVP-NS77H, audio to a friends ps3 on my system and I swear i lost something.(mostly my paradiem sub seemed less punchy)
Can anyone suggest a BD player that provides the upgraded sound that BD's have that will work with my system.

Panny TH-50PZ85U, Polk Audio SDA 1, Pardiem sides, center, sub, and backs.

I'm confused.... any blu-ray player you buy, you'll want to run HDMI out to the receiver, and receiver out to the T.V....... You DO NOT want optical.....

....sorry..... the ps3 has hdmi output so all the hd codecs will be decoded and sent pcm to your receiver. only hdmi can handle hd codecs.

If you buy the right player, you can use the multichannel analog outs( samsung, denon ,panasonic).

Yes its only passthrough. I'd have to upgrade to the 92 to get HDMI audio. I have to use opt. for audio. So there's no way opt. will ever have as much info on it as HDMI, correct ? Like the other guy posted i'd have to use analog inputs. Sounds like I have to upgrade my rec. to get the full sound possiblitys BD can proform.

If the player outputs the new formats over analog then you don,t need a new receiver. Analog and hdmi will sound the same.

Yeah I got no one to plaim but myself. I should have read these forums before purchasing my A/V Rec. They basically assured me none of this stuff (HDMI 1.3) was available yet, 4 months ago, and opt. should always be adequate. Can anyone tell me if the audio on a good system with the HDMI just is plain worth it or is it still in its infancy ?

But isn't analog using reg. rca cables, thus not as high fi ? I guess i need to do some more reading. I'm not using any of the rca inputs. The output of my tv opt. is reduced to pcm correct ?

actually, the 91 can process 7.1 PCM.

That would do fine with the PS3.

Yeah it can, but I called my dealer today and he says theres more info on the HDMI vs optical. Its compressed, even on stand alone. The ps3,from what i understand, puts out only 5.1 compressed. Thats why I started this thread. Do stand alone BD players put out all the info on optical. So far it seems no is the answer.
I think I'd like raw bitsteam data put to the rec. and let it decode it rather than the player. I have electronics background mostly with old tube guitar amps plus my old record player system. I have a Dynakit 70 stereo tube amp thats from the sixtys that i love listening to with records. But I'm finding this digital stuff complex.

the PS3 can only decode internally, no Bitstream of Lossless audio.

It can decode into 7.1 PCM.

the Pioneer 91 can accept 7.1PCM via HDMI, so that is still a great combination...even if you bought the 92, the PS3 will always be decoding. So its no different.

optical will never support multichannel Lossless audio.

No matter from what player.

You should certainly run HDMI, set the PS3 to PCM, and you'll see the audio codecs you're getting by pressing "Select" during the movie (some menus are in 2-channel, so wait until the actual movie)
