yes, the PSN population has almost reached the ten million mark. The service has practically been growing faster than XBL. God, this has been a great day for us all

10 million accounts to be accurate. Many users obviously have multiple accounts for different regions, alternative accounts for anonymous forum posting (eu.playstation.com forums) etc.

I'm pretty sure someone might do it. It would just take me forever doing it on my PS3 with only a controller.

Sony revealed tons of figures today, including one concerning the PlayStation Network. The company has stated in its corporate strategy meeting that over 9.8 million people have registered accounts on the PSN. In total, 170 million downloads have been accumulated between these users. In related news, it was just last month that Japan celebrated making the one millionth mark.

Other figures from Sony include total sales for current gen platforms. PS3 and PSP had a combined 49 million total sell-in units. The PS3 and PSP have sold 12 million and 37 million, respectively
I thought the ps3 was at 13 million? at lest thats what vgchatz says.

I write Aaron Greenbergs PRs, so Ill tell you what is coming.

Q: So what do you have to say about Sony's Playstation 3 online service hitting 10 million accounts, which equals that of Xbox Live, yet in a shorter amount of time.

Greenberg: Well, what we've found out about our Live to their Network, is that we give the consumers what they want. We give them movies in crystal clear HD, along with high resolution audio, with state-of-the art games, add-ons and trailers. Players also have the ability to access this content in-game and talk with each other no matter what game they are in. Something Sony has yet to do, yet they said they will. Where with Sony, they only have a few downloadable pieces of content in their "PSN Store" and limited online capablities. Oh yeah, and Sony charges $500 for a blu-ray player that you are forced to buy.

Q: Metal Gear Solid 4 had a terrific launch and is praised by many as being the best game this generation, the week it launched the PS3 sold nearly 3x as many consoles as the XBOX 360.

A: Metal Gear Solid 4 is a very interesting title. What consumers got more or less was a movie with a few interactions. Gears of War 2 will offer the consumer what they really want with graphics that will blow Metal Gear Solid 4 away. They can also play online via Xbox Live. The 360 has currently sold 5 million more consoles in America than the PS3.

Q: Many say the PS3 has a better software lineup than the Xbox 360 with titles such as Resistance 2, Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet, Final Fantasy XIII, Gran Turismo 5, Motorstorm 2, InFamous and has also stolen one of the 360s best exclusives in Bioshock.

A: Well, they aren't the only ones stealing exclusives we are getting Unreal Tournament 3 in July and I am also pleased to announce that the formerly PS3 exclusive Haze will be coming to the Xbox 360 with exclusive content just for the Xbox 360. Along with that, the Xbox 360 has the best exclusives in Halo Wars, Gears of War 2, Alan Wake, and Banjo Kazooie.

vgchartz is "extrapolated" nonsense.

I have no idea how it became such a popular site. It should never be used for anything. vgchartz just makes guesses, some are reasonable and other times they end up a million off -- they are always going to be wrong (it's just by how much)...

Their PSP numbers are off by 1.5 million as well.

Those numbers Sony mentioned are also going to be what they sold to retailers, not customers.

while VGcharts is not perfect. They are still the very best and most accurate choice in getting numbers on a weekly basis. Otherwise you got to wait for monthly NPD reports that lag behind by another month and only include America.

Vgcharts is able to get statistics from about 10% of the market all over the world and can derive the rest from that. In no way is it perfect or even that accurate, but like I said, its the best solution to the problem of real time console statitics.

I forget how much PSP has sold, but I think its near 35 million, so if they are only 1.5 million off of that, that meanst their numbers are off by about 4.5% which really isn't that bad at all.

Your not raining .. it's proof their strategy is working very well.

That was why they made it free...to rapidly grow the on-line user base. No point in launching content services if you have no audience. They have always said they would charge people for the content they wanted and not the basic services they needed for a game console - like on-line gameplay.

The original chart which this is derived from says that the PS3 has sold "over 12 million". That could be 14 million for all we know, with a conservative twice. It could be based off months old data.

Vgchartz historical data is fairly accurate because they go fix all their estimates when they are announced. This makes it pretty much as accurate as possible for NA and Japan. I have no idea how they get data for Europe however, and you should *never* believe their current estimates, as those are almost worthless.

What I don't understand is why people constantly trash vgchartz without trying to understand what it is and how it "works".

This is not ground breaking news. Its free, and there are way more than 10 million PS3s out in the wild. When you look at Xbox live and how many members it has that pay for gold accounts and renew them every year thats way more impressive. Besides Xbox live blows PSN out of the water IMHO.
