Default Superman Returns & PS3

Hey everyone,

I rented Superman Returns from Netflix over the weekend. I have my PS3 hooked up to my 1080i TV via component and already figured out the PS3 doesn't do the correct 720 conversion for my TV (Mitsubishi 55").

However, when placing the Superman disc in the PS3, it took about 5 minutes for it to recognize the disc was there. Then selecting the BD-Rom, Nothing..

I managed to play with the titles / chapters and saw an extra (the Brando featurette), but could not get a main menu or the movie to play.

Terminator 2, Underworld Evolution, Transporter 2, Devil Wears Prada all play right away and are in 1080i.

Did I get a bad disc, or is there something special about SR that won't work on my setup?

Thanks,

Mike H.

sounds like a bad disc to me. I also have this movie and Im suing the ps3 to watch and I dotn have any issue. Also, make sure that you update to 1.51. I heard that there were BRD playback issues with update 1.50.

Sounds like a bad disc. I own Superman Returns and have watched it more than once with no issues.

Yeah, Superman Returns had disturbingly bad PQ (look at Crank if you think HD camerawork can't look AMAZING) but it played fine on my PS/3 (several times now).

It must be my eyes because I watched AvP on friday night and I've watched Superman Returns a few times and MI:III I guess I can't tell the difference between good and bad or I just don't know what to look for.

SR has a lot of artifacts. (Look at the close up of Clark sleeping at the farm for example). It doesn't help that the colors are too warm in some scenes either. I hate movies where they go overboard on the color bias for effect. Ever notice everything is skewed toward the green in Bourne Supremacy?

There was an overall softness to Superman Returns that people were attributing to being from HD cameras (rather than film). But, Crank is an example of a stunning HD camera movie.

I didn't see Superman Returns in the theater. But, I did notice how soft it looked compared to MI-3, which got rave reviews for both HD DVD (VC-1) and BD (MPEG-2).

Given that nobody by Disney is doing BD bit-rate VC-1 (Flightplan and Casanova), we can't know how Superman Returns would look if it were allowed to be unconfined by HD DVD's bandwidth.
