Default Movie soundtracks - should they be included in Blu-ray discs?

Should movie soundtrack be included on the Blu-ray movie disc? With all the space and high price of new releases, why not?

Prices would only go up. Each soundtrack's royalties would have to be paid.

Exactly, the prices would get even higher.
The space has better uses.

If there's room for it i'd love to see some lossless movie soundtracks included on the disc.

I'm just imagining some of my favorites:

DOCTOR ZHIVAGO
THE GODFATHER
LEGENDS OF THE FALL
SPARTACUS
BASIC INSTINCT
FRIED GREEN TOMATOES
GLORY
FIELD OF DREAMS

Its the least an LE should have in my opinion. You pay $10 extra as it is.

That's a horrible idea imo. I would rather just have it on CD, and if the price is raised we are being forced to buy music we probably will never listen to again, it all depends on the movie.

Well they include "Digital Copy" with some Blu-Rays, I think
it would be a great idea to include the Soundtracks because
some soundtracks are worth the extra few bucks...like my
opinion of a good soundtrack below

Won't happen. As one poster already said, there are the composer's/musician's royalties to consider. I can see how to make it happen, but I don't think the average purchaser of titles cares much about soundtracks. Most people don't even see the value in soundtracks. Personally, as a former music major in college, I find that appaling.

But, I'm used to being in the minority.

Not a bad plan.

Isolated music tracks on video discs are common.

But,.. I would say buy the soundtrack if you like the soundtrack. Or if you hear something you like in the soundtrack you may do even better learning more about that artist and maybe buying more of their music.

Completely agree.

And I wouldn't say they're common. They're actually a rarity.

Correction... They USED to be common. Then people got wise and they started asking for royalties which I can't really blame them for. But Batman: The Movie has an isolated score!!! ... Can't say it's one I want though... But on the plus side, if the DVD has it, there's a good chance the Blu-Ray will have it. Provided it's not an easter egg like ones on The Mummy (great score), Apollo 13 and a few others where they're in the language menu.

Superman: The Movie had an isolated score in DD 5.1.

It's a shame the legal issues and royalties thing gets in the way of isolated scores being used on more movie discs. OTOH, not all that many movies have music scores that are truly worth hearing in isolated form. Superman is certainly one of the better ones.

I think any movie that has a very popular and/or award winning score deserves to have it included. The studio should just pay the extra fees it costs to get it done and then pump up that isolated score "extra" in the marketing.

One kind of track that really is rare: isolated sound effects. A couple of Pixar's movies on DVD had them. Pretty strange to watch a movie with only an isolated 5.1 sound effects track.

Those are actually kind of cool. I'd love to get one on an M. Night Shyamalan film.

And I agree with you about award winning (and nominated) scores. The Village has this one cue that repeats 3 times in the movie and is missing off the CD. The Lion King still hasn't (and probably never will) been given a propper score release. And I think it's interesting to hear how some scores mesh with scenes and even how they're mixed. One of my favorite unreleased scores is The Fan which just has a creepy sound to it and I'd love to hear it without all the sound effects and dialogue one day.

Actually, now that I think about it, I think movies with scores that never had a release should have isolated scores on them. That's my dream...

I'd rather pay the extra money towards the actual CD of the soundtrack/score.
