should i buy a blu ray player. or get the hd dvd drive that i am getting for free. is spending the money worth the image quality

If you're getting it for free then . . . why not just get both? What an odd question. I would think it would be worth it to have movies to buy, unless you don't like new releases.

please keep in mind the audio is better on blu-ray and also has scratch resistant coating on the discs plus can hold up to 50gb of data

You need to also remember that you will not be able to buy any movies on HD-DVD like you can with BLU-RAY, So the question that you should be asking yourself is even though the hd-dvd player is free what will I gain by getting this? I won't be able to buy any movies on HD-DVD. Should I just get a blu-ray player?
