Update 5/29

Main Points:

Quote:
The upcoming DJ Hero video game just landed two heavy hitters as MCs: Jay-Z and Eminem.
Both rappers are bringing their music to the newest offshoot of Activision's successful $2 billion Guitar Hero franchise. The game, played with a turntable-shaped controller, is due out this fall for PlayStation 3, PS2, Xbox 360 and Wii (no price or rating yet).

Players use the features on the game's controller — a rotating record platter, sampling buttons, an effects dial and a cross fader — to match streams of song tracks, create effects and add personal touches to score points.

In addition to single-DJ action, two players can compete or play cooperatively. Special mixes will let players use the Guitar Hero controller. The game spans hip-hop, electronica, R&B, soul and pop/rock with songs by 50 Cent, Beastie Boys, KRS-One, Blondie, N.E.R.D., Gorillaz and David Bowie. Superstar DJs such as DJ Shadow, DJ Z-Trip and DJ AM will contribute, too.

"You are going to get over 100 songs from 80 artists and 80 brand-new mixes that have never been heard before, including one with Eminem and Jay-Z (together)," says Guitar Hero president and CEO Dan Rosensweig.

Sounds like something I could be interested in.... Wonder if they'll be using pre-mixed songs, or we'll be making our own.... so many questions now

Not likely. Activision hasn't been that kind to their consumers. Look at the Guitar Hero franchise. They will, most likely, make it a very limiting experience so that they can cash in on the future of the franchise instead of just capitalizing on one round.

hehe, maybe Harmonix will steal Activision's thunder once again and come out with Club DJ or Disc Jockey Pro or somethin' like that.

I don't think Harmonix would ever touch this idea. DJ-ing isn't really "music making." It's more of a "music compiling/combining" technique. Harmonix creators are the classical definition of musicians. They want to create gameplay that directly relates to creating music from instruments, not from mish-mashing other artists previous works.

That sounds slightly hateful, and to be fair, many DJs make music, Moby for one, is a very gifted Artist, whose New CD is Amazing

I don't consider Moby, and other artists like him to be "DJs." The term DJ refers to a "Disc Jockey." That is someone who rides the discs/tracks of other musicians and blends them to sound interesting and new. Moby, and artists like him, may add tidbits from other musicians work into his music, but he creates the foundation of most of his tracks from scratch. There really needs to be another term created for artists like them.

I have a very clear mind about what a DJ is... therefore, 'DJ Hero' may not be the proper title for the game if the game is entirely focused on creating your own music from absolute scratch (no pun intended). But then, if that is the basis of the game, how can there really be any progressive aspect to it? Isn't there software on the market that already allows you to make your own songs in this fashion? If there is a progressive aspect to the game, then it defeats the idea of being an artist since you will, essentially, just be creating patterns that are already programmed into the game software.

Maybe I'm just weird, but the term "DJ" to me implies copycat artistry or someone who can make the end of one song mix well in transition to the beginning of the next song.

Default great potential

This would have great potential for a game. All depends on how they make it. Would we be emulating mixes of Oakenfold, Tiesto, Cox, etc?

One has to remember, the shortage of Wii's in the US is due to the horrible value of the US Dollar compared to the Euro. In Europe, DJs are like rock stars. "Pop", electronic, etc. type music is extremely popular compared to it's level in the US. So there is a huge market and money to be made off of such a title.

Actually this idea has been done. Konami had an arcade version to this like more than 10 years ago. it was called beatmania. This was even before the whole guitar hero explosion.

Does every music/rhythm game from Activision has to have 'Hero' on every brand?
