i have a dell xps m1530 but i didn't get the blu-ray option and i'm looking for alternatives. does anyone have any experience with this external blu ray player? i'm just trying to find a cheaper way of watching hd movies since my xbox hd-dvd add-on is pretty much obsolete, hehe. thanks for all the help!

I don't have experience with the external drive, but the internal version works as well as any BD drive -- and the price is unbeatable. Honestly, the issues with BD playback on the PC are almost entirely software related. All the drives out there are essentially fine, its the playback software that can cause massive headaches.

thanks for the reply. i think i'm just gonna buy the internal version and just buy an external enclosure and save a few more bucks. it seems like veryone uses powerdvd 8 ultra, is that what you recommend? i also saw someone suggest arcsoft, that may have been from you actually, hehe.

Considering NewEgg sells the internal drive for just $119, that's probably not a bad idea. Not many places carry the external version, and the price seems to be all over the place.
As for software, you'll get the OEM version of PowerDVD 7 free with the drive. That works well enough for most titles, but they are horrifically slow about getting out updates to fix problems with new titles. As far as other options, I hate to make a recommendation. PowerDVD8 Ultra, WinDVD 9 Plus, and Arcsoft's Total Media all work fairly well most of the time. They also all have their pros and cons. Personally, I recommend trying out the free software that comes with the drive first, and see what you like/dislike about it. Worst case scenario, you'll still end up out $70-100 for one of the paid options, but at least have a better idea as to what your NEEDS are in terms of the players out there before deciding which one to go with. Best case scenario, the included software does everything you need it to, and can spend that money on more BDs |
