Default PS3 issue

So after downloading and installing v2.41 the other week, I turned my PS3 on the following day to see a message that said my hard drive needed reformatting. I never said yes and simply shut the system off amid a massive panic attack.
When I turned it back on, the message was gone, but so were all of my saved games because I'm a jackass and didn't back them up. Of course, the background that I had downloaded was still in place, which pissed me off because that didn't make any sense to me if the hard drive had been wiped. After a couple of more start-ups the background was gone too.
Now today I was told I needed "the latest version". I wasn't sure any longer what I was currently running as I had not installed any updates since the hard drive failure, so I went to my system information. Anyway, it said in there that I had 19 GB free of 37 GB total. I don't have anything on my PS3 anymore except one 17MB file for MLB 08. So now I am under the impression that all of my saved information is still on the hard drive somewhere, but its just not showing on the PS3. What else would all of those used GB's be?
Any ideas?

pron?

in seriousness, it can be saves but also installs from various games. the data might still be there but you can't access it. so worst thing that happens is you upgrade the firmware and they still aren't present.

Well, right, installed games also. But still the issue is the same. That being the space is clearly occupied but the PS3 denies it because it is a dick. I guess I'll just have to continue sucking it up.

Did you end up updating to 2.42? Maybe that'll magically bring everything back?

I was hoping that might somehow happen. That it might force the PS3 to search inside of itself and recognize both the saved data files and the fact that I'm a good and gentle person when I play with her. Alas, it was not to be. She broke my heart and never looked back. Story of my life. WHY MUST I BE 40 AND ALONE!?! Just kidding, I'm only 39. ...Just kidding....again...

Give up on getting the data back. This is what you should do. You should wipe your hard drive with the format tool. This is to make sure the format structure is the way it should be (basically, to prevent the same thing from happening again). Then, check to see how much free space you have available. You can't lose anything at this point.

A certain percentage of your hard drive space will be kept aside for the PiP function of the BD player. Also, if you have bad sectors on your hard drive, that will be blocked off from use (results in even less available HDD space).
