Default PS3 Downconverts on 720p sets?

Ok i've been confused about this for a while now. I read somewhere a while back that the ps3 will down convert blu-rays to 420p or i (can't remember) when being watched on 720p sets. Is this true? A friend was complaining about his BD PQ and I noticed his ps3 was hooked up using the composite cables. So we went and bought an HDMI cable and still the quality was terrible, this was on a 46" 720p samsung plasma. So I did some research and gathered that you need a 1080p set to watch BD in HD when using a ps3. Is this true or complete BS? I need to know b/c Im not sure whether I should spend the extra 500 bucks on a 1080p set. Thanks!

PS3 will downconvert fine to a 720p set.

If it was hooked up with composite cables, after switching it over to HDMI you might need to go into the custom display settings and check the 720p box to make sure the PS3 is outputting at 720p.

i use a 720 p samsung in my bedroom that i sometimes play blu rays on, its only a 32" but it gets great picture quality, you should probably go in and make sure the optimal settings are correct

Default you'll be fine

I believe the video will be displayed at the highest resolution you selected when setting up your tv. I intenionally set my PS3 on 720p because I prefer that over the max 1080i that my tv offers. I watch blu rays all the time in 720p it definitely is NOT in anything less than 720.

Ok this is reassuring. I was worried I might have to spring for a 1080p set but it sounds like a 720p will do just fine. When we hooked it up I did some tweaking on the settings but still couldn't seem to figure it out. I did set the output to 720p but I realize now that what I was seeing was grain. And the movie was 300, which i've read is notorious for grain. Thanks guys.

What you read was correct at one point. Initially, the PS3 would only output 1080p, 1080i, 480p, or 480i from a Blu-ray movie disc encoded as 1080p or 1080i. I believe it was System Software version 1.8 that corrected the issue and allowed scaling to 720p.

At any rate, now you're fine.

Just a question, it says in the signature under your comment that you have a 1080p LG set. Is this no longer true?

It's technically my dad's, or my family's actually, but im at college now so I don't have an hdtv for myself. But when at home I use the 1080p set.
