Why is my PS3 always at 720P?

I thought it was capable of up to 1080p? Is it the games? I did system setup to auto detect HDMI settings?
I have a 1080p LCD. And a PS3, 40 Gig version. Other than the 720p, everything else works fine.
The games I've played are: Rock Band, Guitar Hero III, Vegas 2....and all display at 720p.
Is it the games?

Not all games are going to be in 1080p. The Blu Ray movies should be in 1080p though. As of right now there a handful of games that are running full 1080p, but that will change as time goes on.

off the top of my head, I'd say that 97% of all current ps3 games are only running 720p... correct me if I'm wrong. But there are supposed to be more 1080p coming.

All PS3 games have a preferred resolution.

- Some games are capable of 1080p and will "prefer" to display at that resolution if you have it available. Super Stardust HD, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue and a number of other titles do this.

- Some games are capable of 1080p, but prefer to output at 720p. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune is the only example I can think of offhand.

- Some games are capable of UPSCALING to 1080p (but you don't really get any more image information - it just changes the nature of the signal). Ninja Gaiden Sigma comes to mind.

- The majority of games don't support 1080p at all, particularly third party titles.

but the 720p games look a lot better then a 360 1080p game anyday one comes to mind is Vegas 2

If you want to change the PS3 from 720P goto display settings on the PS3. Hmm i could have sworn i saw a manual in the box with my PS3 lol.

I did that, and games still display at 720p. Which is the reason for My post.

That explains it. I thought maybe something was wrong with my PS3 and/or TV.

Sometimes you can force a higher resolution by unchecking 720p, some games can support higher resolution like gta4 but default to 720p regardless, other games default to the highest resolution available like conflict.

Go into you settings. Mannually change you HDTV capabilities by unchecking the 1080i, 720p & 720i boxes. Leave the 1080p & 480p box checked. This will force your rez to display at 1080p all the time.
