Default Prices are crazy in Canada!

I'm seriously trying to uprgrade my sound system and have been shopping prices online. Amazon.com has the absolute best prices however they won't ship the audio equipment to Canada. Future shop has the same polk speakers I'm looking for at about double the cost. Does anyone know where I can get these in Canada but not at the inflated prices. Thanks

Almost everything audio/video is overpriced here. Sorry but to get the prices you want you need to go south of the border and bring it back up yourself. Of course, kiss your warantee goodbye though.

Crutchfield canada sells some Polk audio speakers but not the ones you were looking at...

You can wait for a sale from Bestbuy or Futureshop (except something like 25% off). Or you could go to smaller start and bargain the price (usually you will be able to get the price down but maybe not to the point that you want).

Apart from that do you know that there are many speaker manufacturers in Canada. Some like Axiom directly sells their speaker online with free shipping... However they are more expensive than those Polks.

I would seriously recommend looking at Axiom - they are based between Toronto and Barrie and they'll give you a discount for 5 speakers ordered at once.

You also get 30 days in home evaluation, so if you don't like them you can send them back.

Well worth a few extra bucks over those Polks in my opinion.

I had the same problem with my Onkyo receiver. No American companies ship to Canada, and the prices here were well over $400 more then the States. I ended up buying from an ebay store (e-warehouse I think). Got a brand new Onkyo 805 for about $750, compared to abotu $1200 here.

I bought Polk Rti8's at Futureshop after they were discontinued, got really lucky cause the price went down to super cheap and i managed to grab a pair. If I were you though I'd try ebay for those too...saving a few hundred dollars and having no warranty is better imo. Good luck!

Are you guys able to buy stuff here and then bring them back to Canada tax free? That would suck if they make you pay taxes on them.

Actually it depends how long you stay in the US.

24 Hour Exemption - $50 CAN

48 Hour Exemption - $400 CAN

7 Day Exemption - $750 CAN

So, if you exceed those limits, you pay duties/taxes (and the only duty free products are products made in the United States, Mexico, Chile and Costa Rica, except some exception).

" Do you have anything to declare?"

"No."

Have a good day.

That's what I do. I bought my Onkyo in Washington state.

Me too - just brought back a PC put together worth $1700 (24" 1920x1200 3ms 3,000:1 monitor, Sony BD-ROM, 4GB DDR2, Core 2 Quad, HDMI video card, etc.) and it was in the trunk.

Nothing to declare. Even if they do look in I've already removed all the shipping labels - "I just took it over to a friend's place to help me put it all together"

Big screen HDTV's, now that's a little more tricky. But, even paying GST/PST on a larger 50"+ plasma right now still saves you almost $1,000 buying it across the river.

There's no taxes and duties on Computer Product Canada/US ... I mean even if you pay taxes on 750$... it's not that bad since it was 1200$+TX in Canada...

Do you mean there are no taxies levied at customs for computer products?

If you're not in a hurry...wait for the sales...especially on Boxing Day. I've seen speakers go for 50%-75% off at BB and FS. I can't guarentee they'll be the models you are looking for, but there are deals to be had if you're patient.

In general though I agree wholeheartedly....Canadian pricing is ridicuously exhorbitant. And that includes BD's as well. Like I'm going to pay between $29.99- $39.99 for a new release. Not a chance in hell. (Thx Amazon.com)

However if you get pulled over and they find something, you're gonna be flagged for a while and they're gonna search you everytime. You better have a good explanation. And it all depends where you cross the border and where your from. If you leave near the border, chances are they won't search you but it you live 1hr form the border then cross for a couple of hours and come back, they can get suspicious.

For my part I use a little trick... I buy the item I want from a Canada b&m store where I can easily return it. I leave it in the box at home. I bring my receipt with me and go buy the same item in the us. I remove the item from the wrapping (custom agents are not stupid, if they see something that is not opened you're gonna have to be pretty convincing even with your invoice). You can keep to box (if they ask, just say it's more convenient to carry it in a box). Then you can use dobyblue's excuse. Show your receipt and your pretty much covered. Then return the item you bought in Canada, perhaps keep a copy of the invoice (hey you never know!). I would try it with a tv but with speakers, receiver, player, etc.

Yeah I ship all my Blu-ray discs to Buffalo to my friend's house, but I'm a little disappointed to see Amazon charges tax now.

At least many of the other internet companies still do NOT charge tax to NY, which bodes well for things like standalone BD players, new receivers, etc., etc., etc.

I'm going to have to tell them that the PDP-6020 is a computer monitor.
