Default 3d effect on LG

I am in the market for a new tv and was set on the xbr4 until I recieved a call from my brother yesterday. He said he was staying over someone's house and they had just purchased a new high end 1080p LG and mentioned that the image looked different then anything he had ever seen. He was talking about an effect it had that made it seem like you could tell how far back something was in the image. He said it was not 3d in the traditional sense but it seemed like some images were closer or further out and not just flat on the screen. Personally I think he is losing his mind. I have been surfing LG's site and haven't seen anything that resembles that. I was thinking it might be a plasma and he just isn't used to such a high contrast ratio? Can anyone make heads or tails of this?
