Top 10 ways the PS3 stinks
On paper, the Sony PlayStation 3 is easily the most advanced and technically powerful game console on the market: Blu-ray, HDMI output, Bluetooth, and a 60GB hard drive, all built-in. But that's not to say that it's perfect. In fact, there are at least 10 things about the console that drive Executive Editor David Carnoy absolutely bonkers. He lists his gripes--along with suggestions on how to fix them.

Hate is a strong word. Evolutionary psychologists apparently think it's a rational reaction. At least that's what someone wrote on Wikipedia. So I'm sure David Carnoy was being perfectly rational when he wrote up the 10 things he hates about the Sony PS3. Sure it's pricey and everything, but to come up with 10, you really have to know a product. And know the product he does. In this case, to know the PS3 is to hate it.

Like all companies C/NET is in the business to make money. The current popular trend in the world is to hate Sony and the PS3. Lists like this and EGM's article are attempts to cash in on this hate rage and pump up their hits and increase ad revenue.

It's rare to see one of these lists actually say something about the experience of playing a game or a Blu-Ray movie on a PS3. It's a well guarded secret, but they probably enjoyed it.

I think his report was accurate. I agree with everything except #8. I like the Bluetooth remote option in conjunction with my universal remote.

Personally, I think he took the steam out of the true Sony haters arguments. A lot of his points started with a little education/background info about what he was pointing out and also pointed out what others are or aren't doing (an example would be his point about the PS3's pricing).

IMO, this was a fair nicely written article. It brings in the Sony haters and fans alike, and then education the Sony haters with accurate information. If an anti-Sony person would have written this article, their would be no explainations to the affect of "you can't blame Sony for HDMI's problems" or "you're only paying $100 for the Blu-ray high-def movie option on the PS3 compared to $200 for the HD-DVD add-on", IMO.

The article points out the issues about the PS3 that need to be addressed by Sony. Once those issues are addressed, the PS3 shall become a much better game console and a blu-ray player! The PS3 software must be updated to include multi-tasking, a very important and a must have feature!

ill admit it. the 360 is great. and the games are bad ass. but the ps3 is the superior technology worth its weight in gold! and kick ass games are coming soon ( not to mention the already available resistance, madden, and ridge racer). as to the online store its not that bad. i thought it was so cutting edge and friggin simple that even the first time i used it i was able to download an actual playable demo!

Some people are going to hate the ps3 no matter what sony does. On that top ten article deal, most of those issues can be fixed with simple firmware updates. Sony is losing money on every console, but didn't microsoft lose money on every console with the xbox 360 launch? Most people don't care about the price because one million consoles have already been sold and that means that one million people don't really care about the price. Blu-ray has more studio support then HD-DVD.

This one I agree with, the web browser does suck, but firmware updates will help as they have on the PSP.

6. PS3 downscales 720p on TVs that don't support the resolution
Right after it launched, word quickly got out that if you had an older HDTV that supported only 1080i resolution for HD, the PS3 failed to upconvert 720p games to 1080i, Instead, it downconverted the games to 480p. For those who have no idea what all these numbers mean, the bottom line is that a game that was supposed to be displayed in its full high-definition glory was actually being displayed in DVD-level enhanced definition. While the bug, which has yet to have been fixed, didn't affect everyone, it's still annoying.

7. No DVD upscaling
This will be fixed in a firmware upgrade.

8. No IR support
Non-issue since you would need a controller or BD remote to navigate the XMB anyway

9. HDMI issues/overcomplicated audio options
I have absolutely no HDMI issues. As far as the audio options, if you already know your way around HDMI, blu-ray, and other higher end technologies it should be a non-issue.

10. Anemic PlayStation Store
I agree with this also but it will ramp up in 2007 so again another non-issue in the near future.



In summary 50% or more of this can be fixed via firmware which I expect to happen in 2007, the other stuff is just his personal preference YMMV.

I read through Carnoy's list - and I felt that he rendered his opinion in a very balanced fashion. Most of the limitations - if you could call them that - were well handled, not only in terms of a brief backdrop to the problem, but also inclusive of putative solution(s).

A few posts above have echoed my thoughts. So, instead of "knocking" the messenger, we should probably push Sony to release the firmware updates and upgrade the online experience. Paidgeek, are you listening?

The guy who wrote the gamespot article really needs to get it together. Does this tool even own a PS3? He says he wants to share animated GIF images with people in HOME but anybody who owns a PS3 knows animated GIFS dont work on the system, only in the browser.

"The existing community features need to be better integrated into the games before something like PlayStation Home will sound appealing. "

Now look how he contradicts himself:

You might think I'm down on PlayStation Home, but to be honest, I can't wait to try it (HOME). It all looks so creepy and marketing-driven that getting in there and messing with people is almost certain to be a good time. But considering that Sony doesn't quite have the basics of online functionality down yet, it's hard to get excited about anything that isn't directly focused on filling those basic needs first.



Standardize Online Features for Multiplayer Games

He says Resistance Fall of Man and Motorstorm are the only good online games out for PS3. Maybe because they are the best games out for the PS3? Just maybe? He also complains Tekken and Virtua Fighter are not online. *Sigh* You expect online fighting games for the first generation PSN?

Reconsider the Price

He only mentions the European PS3 price tag here, nowhere does he mention Europe has a higher cost of living. PS3 cost more then the 360 because, as the writer likes to say about PS3's PSN, you get what you pay for. Want an overheating, 40GB less, FPS obsessed, loud system with a last generation optical drive and no WIFI? Pay $200 less for the 360.

Fix Web Browsing and Media Management

So if PS3 fixes webrowsing and media management that will help in your decision to buy a PS3? Whatever. Sounds like hes crying now

Make Accomplishments (trophies) Matter

Again, is this a wishlist? And how does he know accomplishments dont matter in HOME already?

I'm just sick and tired of people constantly whining about PS3 and how it's not worth it

Make the PS3 $400 and you would never hear any of this 10 ways the PS3 stinks or 10 ways to make us buy PS3 BS.

They seem content on buying the XBOX 360 just because its cheaper. Just like Blu-ray and HD-DVD. Bluray is superior to HD-DVD in every way yet people will always trash the more expensive (and better) item and buy the cheaper stuff

Don't like the price? Dont think its worth it? Dont buy it. And shut up too while I play these EXCLUSIVE PS3 games:
