Question Who´s using the original PS3 Net-Cable ?

Hi,

I´m just wondering how many of you are using it.

I would want to use it, but unfortunately it´s to short...

Since the beginning, I use a 16 feet wire.
But I´ve read in the manual that you should be careful what kind of wire you use... (better the original).

I´m a bit worried now... but everything works perfect...

Somebody else who doesn´t use the original one ?
Any important description the wire should have ?

Thanks.

Cat 5e cable is an enhanced version of Cat 5 that adds specifications for far end crosstalk. Although 100BASE-T was designed for use with Cat 5 cable, the tighter specifications associated with Cat 5e cable and connectors make it an excellent choice for use with 100BASE-T. Despite the stricter performance specifications, Cat 5e cable does not enable longer cable distances for Ethernet networks: cables are still limited to a maximum of 328 ft (100 m) in length (normal practice is to limit fixed ("horizontal") cables to 90 m to allow for up to 5 m of patch cable at each end).

Category 6 cable, commonly referred to as Cat 6, is a cable standard for Gigabit Ethernet and other network protocols that is backward compatible with the Category 5/5e and Category 3 cable standards. Cat-6 features more stringent specifications for crosstalk and system noise. The cable standard provides performance of up to 250 MHz and is suitable for 10BASE-T / 100BASE-TX and 1000BASE-T (Gigabit Ethernet). It is expected to suit the 10GBASE-T (10Gigabit Ethernet) standard, although with limitations on length if unshielded Cat 6 cable is used.

CAT 5e are good up to 100 meters and are good for home or office use with all 10/100 Networks . CAT 6 would be good for 10/100/1000 Networks or also known as Gigabit . The brand and connectors don't make much of a difference . You can buy the raw materials your self with a ethernet crimping tool and make them yourself if you like . 100 meters is around 300 feet so i think your good to go .

But it can´t happen that the data bitrate speed will do any damage, because of a no-name cable right ?

Umm, well. Damage can happen, but that's not going to be the cable's fault unless there is a critical failure.

You may want to look into a surge supressor or battery solution that works on RJ-45 if that's your concern.

I ocassionally use the original cable. It's not short though. I don't know about the american version, but the japanese version is certainly long

If you get a Cat5e cable it has to meet minimum certification. That's the whole point of having the standard.

And you can get 1000Base-T across Cat5e.

The difference in the specs come about through cable pair orientation, gauge, and twists per inch. When you have an electrical signal run through a wire you emit an electromagnetic field. When you have multiple currents running through wires tightly packed you have the risk of those EM fields affecting the circuit through induction. To reduce the EM field they twist the wires. This keep the pair insulated from external fields and keeps it's own signal from interfering with others.

In telephony, for example, Cat 3 certifies 1 twist every 3 or so inches. All telephone plant meets (or realistically should meet)that minimum standard. Doing so (as well as shielding and grounding a sheath around it) prevents induction from high power and other circuits running parallel within the cable itself.

Cat6 goes one step above Cat5e by keeping the orientation of the pairs within the cable and adding additional shielding it keeps the signal integrity from degrading. Realistically Cat5e will be the standard for basic service for another decade and most likely will be around for the bulk of this century unless some application requires networking in excess of 1Gb/s

The bane of communication workers is people cheapening out and getting the wrong cable. If you get any decent Cat5e cable you'll be perfectly fine. But don't get anything less than that.
