Default Miami Vice (TV Series)

Do you think the TV series from the 80's will come to Blu-ray? Or is the DVD the best we are gonna get?

If $ is to be made, this will definitely become available on BD. Here's hoping that that is sooner than later.

Default Miami Vice TV BR

I hope eventually this series gets the HD treatment. I can't think of many other shows that would benefit more from a BR transfer. Vice certainly deserves better than the current standard disc set.

I own all five seasons on DVD (and I used to videotape them back in the mid-1980s when I was in middle school).

I would gladly purchase this show all over again on Blu-ray, though.

Under one condition:
The rights to the individual songs for each episode absolutely must be retained, just as they were on the DVD releases for all five seasons. Hugely important!

Miami Vice is my second favorite TV series of all time, behind the original series of The Twilight Zone.

I know the DVD releases were delayed due to the difficulties in tracking down the proper owners of the songs, especially the later seasons which selected fairly obscure tunes that quickly went out-of-print. So hopefully the contracts signed at that time included "future home video formats".

MV was shot on film with high per-episode costs and production values, so it would certainly realize a PQ upgrade on blu.

I think Miami Vice would lend itself very nicely to Blu-ray IF they restore the episodes but it seems like it would be prohibitively expensive to do so with 5 seasons and an average of 22 episodes per season. It's a great show with big-budget, film-quality production values. I just don't see too many pre-90's TV shows making the leap to high-def, no matter how popular they are, unfortunately.

It wouldn't cost a fraction of what they are doing for Star Trek:TNG - re-scanning every piece of film, re-cutting every episode and re-doing every special effect.

Someone posted this screencap from the HD broadcast of the pilot episode back from 2006.

No reason it shouldn't, the series was shot on film.

I'd buy these as soon as they came out. The DVDs aren't awful, but I'd love to show the pilot episode and at least the first two seasons (which are the best IMO) on my home theater and it look stunning.

Agree, Fox butchered WKRP on DVD not getting the original music. Unfortunately, it's better to get an EBAY copy for that TV show. Granted it was shot on video, which I thought Miami Vice was too? If Miami Vice was shot on film, by all means put it out, otherwise leave it on DVD. I mean it was the 80's, the decade of videotape.

How did you see it? Is it available online? Also, was it in fact, TRUE widescreen? Because I've seen some "HD" clips of the pilot episode on youtube, complete with the NBC logo in the corner, but it is not really widescreen. It is the fullscreen picture zoomed in to fill in the black borders on the sides.

Agreed. They really shot themselves in the foot with season 3 by changing the tone and style of the show. As well as moving the time-slot. Season 3 has some good eps, but seasons 3-5 are "Miami Vice" in name only. Only positives I give season 3 is getting rid of Noogie (never found him funny), some of the haircuts (except for Don Johnson's ugly short hairstyle), great guest actors, and of course, the Testarossa.

MV is one of my favorite shows. I wish they had kept the style of seasons 1 and 2 for at least 1 or 2 more years. If they had to go in a darker direction like they did it later on, and THEN went with the season 3 style after 4 or 5 seasons of the earlier style, I'm certain the series would've lasted into the 90's.

I have a copy of it that I got from someone else. I don't know where he got it though. 960x720, 1.65GB.

AFAIK there can't be a "true" widescreen version because the show was composed and shot for 4:3 and nothing was ever cropped out on TV or the DVDs so what we've always seen is all there is. So I guess a blu-ray version would be 1440x1080 pillarboxed.

Are you sure NBC showed it in widescreen in 2006 (cropped)? Because if they did, then I have no idea where the copy I have is from.
